Irish maternity hospital appoints a 'self described' doctor with no medical experience

A frightening article in today's papers about the failures of Limerick maternity hospital to exercise any due diligence in appointing a man (who was essentially a student with zero experience) to a paid post in gynaecology / obstetrics. The judge stated that he 'self described' as having been a Senior House Officer but in fact had merely been an observer.

The lack of due diligence is everywhere it seems, particularly when it relates to the safety of women and children.

Bloody hell. I find it worse that they aren't identifying him.

Budgieinaberet · 11/11/2018 12:12

Sorry I didn't phrase that very well. I mean he can just go somewhere else and carry on.

WindowsSmindows · 11/11/2018 12:16

But he IS a doctor, just a shit one. He put on his cv that he had already had a job as an SHO and he hadn't.
His colleagues quickly picked up on the fact that he's shit.
The real issue is how difficult it is to get junior doctors, because the pay and conditions of junior doctors is pretty poor, especially outside of Dublin.

Not in Ireland as he has been suspended from practising medicine but whether this would be shared with the UK who knows. Brenda Power in the Times not at all impressed and nails it as misogyny - share token:

Windows , he's not a doctor - that's the whole point. He's a student with NO experience - but lied and was rated, accepted and appointed - by people who should know better.

The article says he has graduated from medical school in a European country, and is a junior doctor, so he IS a doctor rather than a student. But a totally inexperienced and devious one.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/11/2018 12:46

That is hateful. Surely if he identifies as an SHO his identity should respected and affirmed.

How dare a court thinks it knows better than him who his authentic self is!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/11/2018 13:38

It is interesting that the vast majority of individuals who self-identify in reality or jest were born with a dick between their legs.

sackrifice · 11/11/2018 18:09

FCM was not an isolated case, rather one of several he had encountered — “doctors” recruited by defective procedures and posing an obvious danger to patients.

Not just a one off either.

heresyandwitchcraft · 11/11/2018 18:26

This is a dire indictment of the system. Total safeguarding failure. WTAF.

Thought for a mo that was Mr Grimshaw popping up again. I expect he is a bit old for that sort of thing now.

geekaMaxima · 11/11/2018 20:00

Yes, he is a qualified doctor alright. Just a spectacularly inexperienced one. Follow-on piece here: https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/editorial/the-irish-times-view-on-medical-recruitment-a-clear-and-present-danger-1.3691120

The doctor concerned graduated from medical school in an eastern European country in 2015. The country was not named, but a doctor from any EU state is entitled to be registered to practice in Ireland without further examination of his competence. However, in some parts of eastern Europe it is possible to graduate with a medical degree with minimal hands-on experience.

OP Would you consider asking MNHQ to amend the title? He's not a "self-described" doctor so the current title is inaccurate.

Male bullshitters are more likely than female ones to be believed, tolerated and even admired. Frank Abagnale- the subject of the not very critical film Catch Me If You Can- impersonated a doctor (according to the wikipedia entry about him, a baby nearly died of oxygen deprivation due to his lack of medical knowledge. The entry does not record whether the child suffered permanent brain damage or whether the mother sustained birth injuries just because the vain selfish little prat wanted to prance around in a white coat chatting up the nurses).

How often do you read articles about why women don't get high flying well paid roles that include that study showing that women don't apply for roles unless they fulfil nearly 100% of the requirements whereas men basically just wing it on much less. With the intimation that this fake it till you make it attitude is so great and women need to be more like men in this regard.

Sorry for the late response. The phrase 'self described' is a direct quote - the judge used it I believe - I noticed the phrase in several of the news reports:
"The judge said the doctor was recruited despite never being registered to practice medicine in the country where he received his medical degree or in his native country.
While he had self-described himself as having been a senior house officer in a UK hospital, a letter from the NHS made clear he was merely an observer in a department of medicine and was to have no hands on contact with patients."

He IS a doctor. He self described himself as an SHO. After a year of internship ALL doctors become SHOs if they continue working, that's the next rung of the ladder.

Honestly if there's a conversation to be had it's about how shit some doctors trained in other countries are, and how stuck some hospitals are for juniors (as Irish grads take much better jobs abroad)

PackingSoap · 14/11/2018 12:04

Something similar happened in my local hospital. An EU doctor got a job as an obs registrar, claiming he'd been a consultant in his home country. It slowly became clear that he was pulling a fast one. Last thing I knew, he'd been managed out.

I have no idea why there is this attitude in this country that it is somehow "racist" to request proof of qualifications, abilities or simple facts about a person. It's utterly bonkers.
