The Bank of England is asking for nominations - app.keysurvey.co.uk/f/1348443/10fc/

There's Marie Curie and Dorothy Hodgkins for starters.

Couple of other threads - the one on this board has some discussion and suggestions.

Freespeecher · 11/11/2018 11:46

I don't think Marie Curie would be eligible as she was Polish. Plenty of other candidates though.

(Autocorrect offered Marie Cutie! Glad I caught that one in time).

BeyondVicious · 11/11/2018 11:55

I've already voted for Dorothy Hodgekins, but have a bump :)

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/11/2018 12:35

I have already voted for Rosalind Franklin, but do have another bump Smile

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/11/2018 13:37

Thanks for making me aware of this. I’ve voted for Rosalind Franklin.

InProgress · 11/11/2018 19:05

I also voted for Rosalind Franklin.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/11/2018 19:20

The criteria - apart from being a scientist - is British and dead. It's nominations rather than a vote as such.

I've nominated Dorothy Hodgkin - a shining example of a truly great female scientist with a long and illustrious career (and a mother, to boot!).

PhysaliaPhysalis · 11/11/2018 20:12

I've nominated Dorothy Hodgkin - only British female with a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

arranfan · 11/11/2018 20:26

In addition to the usual, for various reasons, I've a soft spot for:

Harriette Chick en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harriette_Chick

Janet Lay-Claypon en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janet_Lane-Claypon

Elsie Widdowson en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elsie_Widdowson

donquixotedelamancha · 11/11/2018 21:41

I've nominated Dorothy Hodgkin - only British female with a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

This^. Protein crystallography is of huge import.

I would add that had Rosalind Franklin lived she is highly likely to have picked up a Nobel or two.

MummytoCSJH · 11/11/2018 21:43

I voted for Rosalind Franklin a few days ago. When I saw an article about it, she is the first lady who sprang to mind who really deserves recognition that she never received.

FermatsTheorem · 11/11/2018 23:04

I've already voted too - Dorothy Hodgkin. But always good to bump this.

ArcheryAnnie · 11/11/2018 23:06

I put down Ada Lovelace, because she's now used as a proxy for all the women in science whose achievements are overlooked. (Ironically, of course, that has made her much better known - but thaat's a positive, too.)

fredleighton · 12/11/2018 07:22

I would also vote for Ada Lovelace.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/11/2018 14:25

Having never heard of Harriette Chick before this thread (thanks @arranfan !) serendipitously I caught a short R4 program mainly about her when I was driving somewhere yesterday.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00013tr

Interesting re difference in female vs male priorities and approaches after WWI

arranfan · 15/11/2018 15:00

Having never heard of Harriette Chick before this thread

Thanks for the programme link. I'm in awe of her and the other women at the Lister Insitute (including an Australian doctor who is the aunt of Tam Dayell in addition to being so engaged in the work that she and Chick did in Austria post-WW1).

I hope they mentioned that she gave a speech to the Nutrition Society (?) on her 100th birthday. :)

GerdaLovesLiIi · 15/11/2018 20:14

I suggested Hertha Ayrton the first woman to be proposed for the fellowship of the Royal Society. jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/ayrton-hertha-marks?fbclid=IwAR08PINGMzax5Iy2o2NZXK68cEAtPFxHeorU8Yl10uLsMGC2ABQSvaZV4sI

Mary anning. Amazing woman who discovered fossils and is inspiring girls to keep looking for fossils.

BagelGoesWalking · 15/11/2018 20:52

I voted Ada Lovelace.

Womantheonlykind · 16/11/2018 23:20

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabella_Bird

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 17/11/2018 11:10

I've already voted for Ada Lovelace.

AspieAndProud · 18/11/2018 03:33

Ros Franklin for me too: the one thing that excludes her from the Nobel - being dead - is a requirement for this honour.

But big up to Mary Anning. Every school kid knows ‘She Sells Sea Shells’ but how many know who the tonguetwister is about?

(Allegedly!)
