Is he not making a point?

Lovetocycle · 08/11/2018 07:05

Yes, I thought that he was making a point as well.

GruffWithAHeartOfGold · 08/11/2018 07:05

However, the court presented a similarly valid argument, saying that changing Ratelband's age would essentially mean legally deleting a period of his life.

Really Hmm that's why they can't?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 08/11/2018 07:11

he's making a really good point here

and not changing his age because it will delete a period of his life?

what about a person who has fathered children becoming legally female? Their father has been deleted. is that ok?

PurpleOva · 08/11/2018 07:18

Other than the tinder reason though, ageism is something older people face.

So I have a lot more sympathy for this one than the trans race white male, for example.

NonaGrey · 08/11/2018 07:44

I too suspect he is making a point.

It’s quite an interesting point though.

If I identify as 65 can I start my pension now please? Have winter fuel allowances? Get a free bus pass?

If I eventually for another 60 years after self identifying as twenty years older than my biological age can I claim the record for the oldest ever woman when I live to 140?

Alternatively can I identify as 7yo go back to school, have my parents claim CB, claim cheap travel, cheap entrance to activities and attractions, join in at soft play, be treated in a children’s hospital and use the same loos as the other kids at school?

The answer is “no, your age is a biological reality” regardless of how you feel inside which does rather beg the question...

KennDodd · 08/11/2018 07:51

I notice some of his reason for wanting to lower his age is lack of success on Tinder. I suspect he may not be contracting 69 year old women, if he did he might have more success.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 08/11/2018 07:54

According to the BBC he’s a minor celeb in the Netherlands, so the idea that he’d be more successful on tinder or at getting work if his age were lowered is ridiculous because he’s already fairly well known. So he’s either doing this to make a point or as a huge joke. Even if he’s is just doing it for the lols he’s succeeded in making a point anyway.

Beamur · 08/11/2018 07:58

He's making a perfectly reasonable (although probably tongue in cheek) argument. If you can be what you want to be, simply by saying so, why not this?

BesmirchingMotherhood · 08/11/2018 11:49

He’s making a point whether he’s meaning to be making a point or not.

Bowlofbabelfish · 08/11/2018 12:08

He’s trying to force examination of the issue in court and to make them rule on it. They HAVE to rule he can’t do it because otherwise everyone’s 65 and getting a pension, thirty year olds can be in schcool classes (gosh that’d never happen eh?) and all manner of insanity.

And when they do rule on it they will have to say WHY they don’t allow it. And all those reasons (child safeguarding, etc) can be used to torpedo the idea of self ID.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 08/11/2018 12:15

Yes, think it's very clever & can be used, if he's turned down, against self-id of any sort.

I can't decide if I want to self ID as older (pension, bus pass), or younger (free stuff, no responsibility) .

tobee · 08/11/2018 12:23

This has also made the BBC News app, so, hopefully, wider publicity.

JimmyJones · 08/11/2018 12:24

I saw it in the Guardian today too.

www.theguardian.com/world/2018/nov/08/dutch-man-69-starts-legal-fight-to-identify-as-20-years-younger

He makes a good point about getting a mortgage! I suppose it would bring private health insurance premiums down too Wink

deydododatdodontdeydo · 08/11/2018 12:32

Bowl has it exactly. It's actually pretty clever.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 08/11/2018 12:45

Yes if it’s not allowed, the reasoning will be fascinating

And pretty transferable I’d have thought

BesmirchingMotherhood · 08/11/2018 12:45

I read it on the Graun’s fb. Comments* there are not seeing the point being made, are very much seeing male entitlement, are not seeing parallels with transgenderism and are definitely not experiencing any sense of irony.

*Comments left standing at any rate. Who knows what the deleted ones might have said.

Bowlofbabelfish · 08/11/2018 12:59

would bring private health insurance premiums down to

That’s a really good point.

So insurers couldn’t discriminate on age, or really any status, which will be good for all the clapped out 70 year old obese heavy drinking smokers who can now identify as 25 year old three times a week joggers who don’t smoke and enjoy a single glass of quality red once a month.

What could possibly go wrong? No more firefighters needing to retire at certain ages , they can work till seventy. Fifty year old bloke who always wanted to join a brownie pack? You’re whatever age and sex you identify as sir miss, will you be a gnome or an elf? Can’t win in the men’s 18-40 marathon category? Try the women’s - they’re easier to beat. Still not working? Try the women’s 60-65 category.

Endless opportunities! Reality is whatever you want it to be!

malaguena · 08/11/2018 13:08

I think it’s a perfectly reasonable demand in the current context. At least he was once in his 40s so he knows what it’s like. A trans woman on the other hand has no experience of being female. Most men on dating websites vastly underestimate their age anyway (while overestimating their heights).

PinkCalluna · 08/11/2018 13:26

thirty year olds can be in schcool classes (gosh that’d never happen eh?)

I do remember a case from when I was young of a 27yo man who pretended to be 17 so that he could apply for medicine. He attended high school and socialised with lots of 17 yo girls, including going on holiday with them.

soloula · 08/11/2018 13:28

I didn't read it as male self entitlement or anything like that. From his brief bio, he seems a well educated individual and I would assume he knows exactly what he's doing, pointing out the ludicrousness of being able to change your sex but not your age, as both are a biological fact.

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 08/11/2018 13:39

I thought he was making a point and good on him.

He was one of the voices in Cars2 I believe

123bananas · 08/11/2018 16:58

It is a good point and one that should be considered further.

When I worked in schools we had a family where all the children were definitely older than the ages given. The youngest one (in primary school) admitted to friends that he was old enough to be in secondary school, but no one could confirm it when they were questioned. It was thought that they lied so the eldest (thought to be in their 20's) would still be able to access education.

It is also a safeguarding issue for children's hospital wards.

A case discussed here back in 2012

I often still get ID'd for cigarettes and alcohol despite being several decades over the age limit. Maybe I can pretend I am a teenager all over again and stay on a children's ward next time I need to be in hospital. They have free tv.
