Stop Violence Against Women banner unfurled at Liverpool match in Belgrade

Last nights match Red Star Belgrade v Liverpool in Serbia (which was well covered by BT sport) saw fans unfurling a 17 foot banner in english saying 'Stop Violence Against Women'. Brilliant! If advertisers refuse our voices, lets speak up in areas where they can't stop us. Any one out there with season tickets to a premier league club?!

Brilliant! Any pictures?

Hope that works. I'm new to this :) You'll have to scroll down a little way.

Thanks for the heads up! We've tweeted it, with that picture.

ReSisters, if you know of anyone has a season ticket and wants to donate it to the cause for a banner-holder, I'll be happy to volunteer. Purely altruistic and nothing to do with watching the game Wink

LiverpoolReSisters · 07/11/2018 10:54

Haha, of course. ;)

scepticalwoman · 07/11/2018 11:06

I'm sure there'll be a bullying mayor along shortly complaining about women ruining things for the city again.... Hmm

Budgieinaberet · 07/11/2018 11:22

Shame about the result, but excellent work there

BlackForestCake · 07/11/2018 18:51

Just wondering why they did this? Obviously the subject can and should be addressed anywhere and everywhere, but it seems a bit out of context. Do they think football fans need their consciousness raised about VAW? Do they believe VAW is a particular problem in Britain that needs addressing? Are any of the Liverpool players allegedly violent and they’re having a go?

Bestseller · 07/11/2018 18:55

Yes, what exactly is this about?

ADastardlyThing · 07/11/2018 19:02

Probably for the same reason they have mcdonalds banners but afaik the players don't eat big Mac's while playing so also out of context - to raise awareness

Bestseller · 07/11/2018 19:09

It doesn't look like an official advertising banner to me, but one that fans have taken along with them. Football fans often draw attention to a cause like this.

I’m another one who doesn’t really understand why the Serbian fans did this? And why in English? Confused

Bestseller · 07/11/2018 19:26

The article seems to suggest it was an election day protest against Trump's record with women?

SlowlyShrinking · 07/11/2018 19:28

Im all for it, obviously! Let’s hope some men take notice...

barelove · 07/11/2018 19:54

I believe it was organised by UN Women, an organisation that campaigns for gender equality, specifically women rights. It was in English as the match was filmed and broadcast throughout Europe and English is widely read. I'm sure they saw it as a brilliant way to get their message seen by what was likely to be a male majority - their target audience.

Thete is evidence that domestic violence goes up when there are big matches on - police often do campaigns around things like the world cup. So I think it was very apt.

cupofteaandcake · 07/11/2018 20:12

Bingle is right, there is spike in domestic violence if the home team/supporters team doesn't win. In NZ it's a real problem if the ABs loose

BeyondVicious · 07/11/2018 21:00

There's a spike whether it's a win or a loss, iirc. Possibly a bigger spike for a loss though
