Sir David Attenborough says contraceptive pill has changed society

Couldn't resist this little quote about elephants. Love him.

‘They bring up all the kids, they deal with the problems of drought and so on. The males dash around, trumpeting and copulating whenever they get the chance'

It's good to have an occasional lighthearted thread. I'm still not feeling optimistic though.

Bonobo females also run the show its a matriarchal primate

ILuvBirdsEye · 06/11/2018 12:47

I ❤ the cheetah mom... she gives 0 fucks!

ARosebyAnyOtherNameChange · 06/11/2018 13:41

I have to say, the Mail's phrasing 'the example of female bull elephants...' worries me a little!

WonderFluid · 06/11/2018 13:51

"Elephants are wonderful."

They make great chess sets.

"Cows too. And sheep. Wonderful matriarchal societies where males are tolerated, at best."

Dumb cattle whose greatest achievement is being key ingredients in Sunday roasts.

"Gorillas and orangs are completely fabulous as well."

They sit on their arses all day long eating, getting fat and farting.

So powerful and inspiring.

"Pan chimpanzees less so, humans, well, yes, it’s a bit embarrassing really."

You're embarrassed to be human. Pathetic.

"I wince when I think of the brave warrior female hyena. Imagine giving birth thru a pseudo penis? I mean seriously, ouch."

Sounds like some sort of TRA fantasy.

You people are shit at this. You should've pick termites or ants; controlled by a queen, ancient, widespread, highly successful and industrious creatures who build remarkable cities that, if they were scaled up, would dwarf most human efforts. Myrmecology is still informing other branches of human science.

And you pick cattle and corpse-eating scavengers as examples of matriarchy. Says a lot.

Wow Elephants make great chess pieces no words

ABitCrapper · 06/11/2018 14:50

I always feel sorry for queen ants and termites etc. I think they are rather more prisoner and slave than queen ruler .

Queen bee maybe

Lacypants · 06/11/2018 15:05

"you people are shit at this"

Are you feeling well? Just you seem awfully annoyed at people on the internet for having a light-hearted conversation about animals. It seems a little bit of an overreaction and actually, a lot of your post is quite spiteful and mean spirited. Does it always upset you that other people like things and feel enjoyment?

Hyenas aren't scavengers. They mainly hunt their meals although, like most carnivores, they do eat carcasses they now and again come across. However, they are often driven away from their kills by lions.

quixote9 · 07/11/2018 00:58

Also, re female hyenas, don't feel sorry for them. They have the usual female anatomy. Just much larger clitoral structure than usual in other species.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 07/11/2018 02:29

Hyenas are powerful, intelligent and live in complex social structures of tens of hyenas. They are both scavengers, which is an important ecological role, and extremely effective hunters.

I have great admiration for hyenas, they are smart, funny, brave, sneaky and a bit scary.

I have considerable affection for sheep and cows as well, they are so curious. Unlike some humans ...
