Something of a fuss in York over the last few months after a commemorative plaque was put up describing a lesbian as gender non conforming. Now, thankfully they are consulting on the wording.

I've suggested the following:

Anne Lister
1791-1840
of Shibden Hall, Halifax
Lesbian Entrepreneur and Diarist
Her union with Ann Walker was blessed here
Easter 1834

I think the fact that she was a businesswoman is important. I also think 'took sacrement here' isn't terribly clear.

If anyone agrees I think multiple comments with the same wording would be more likely to be listened to.

I also didn't think that "Took sacrament here to seal her union" was clear but having looked on Wikipedia (yes, I know):

"The women took communion together on Easter Sunday 1834 in Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, York, which in their view married them."

I think it is accurate.

I may have had a little rant n the comment section Blush

Holy trinity is such a beautiful church and I'm moved that it's connected to this story. Do go find it (It's hidden down alleyways) if you're ever in York.

I'm hopeful that they will respect her as a lesbian in the updated version.

Being a lesbian is not about "what happens in the bedroom". It is not a kink. That is quite a homophobic statement.

Personally I have no objection to the proposed new wording and find it a massive improvement over the first.

You need to remember their are a number of interested parties in this and objecting to the new wording may result on the old one being retained.

Gileswithachainsaw · 04/11/2018 23:22

I don't give a shit if you think it is "homophobic", sexuality is not something to wear like a badge of honour to be pushed into everyones sodding faces

It's a word on a plaque not a live sex show. You can thank the TRAs for trying to erase women and lesbians and ensuring these things need defining with no room for any questions. If they weren't trying to label everyone according to their ideology it wouldn't need to be said
