I should have advertised this to you lot and am kicking myself! It's today at 5pm, Chancellor's building, G03. I will take notes and report back!

No worries all, glad to do it (it serves as a form of notes for myself too)!!

Hey! I was at this meeting too :) it was really really good. Can I PM you contessa?

RosaFreedman1983 · 30/10/2018 00:28

We invited circa 25 academics and institutions (including Stonewall, TELI, etc) and they all declined (some saying no-platforming of the panel, some less disingenuous). We wanted a balanced platform, but when the entirety (including SupportU who pulled out with 40mins notice) won't discuss then we have no option

Oldstyle · 30/10/2018 00:55

Frustrating for everyone but it still sounds like an excellent session. Was the audience diverse in their views do you think or did pro GRA people not attend? I know that twitter is not the universe but I do get the sense that they have very few evidence-based arguments either for making these changes per se or for the assertion that it doesn't impact on the EA. Which was maybe why Stonewall etc decided not to attend?

ContessaGoesMarchingDOWNTOHELL · 30/10/2018 06:20

Of course, Radly Grin

I really enjoyed the meeting Rosa; many thanks to you and Rosemary for organising it! And 40 minutes notice? That's utterly absurd. What reason did they give? Traffic?!

Ah, just seen Twitter re drop out. I feel she miscalculated really; if you drop out at such a late stage then your name will end up linked to the topic/event anyway. You might as well go all out and turn up to put your views across in a considered manner....

What reason did they give on Twitter?

It seems a bit shooting yourself in the foot, basically the first ever university to allow this topic to be discussed between 25 experts, then all of the pri-trans speakers drop out leaving only a handful of GC speakers... who put their point across extremely well.
If you believe in something so strongly surely it would be to your benefit to talk about it?!

I guess they're still clinging onto #nodebate, so the rest of the world is just debating without them.

Gncq · 30/10/2018 08:00

Thanks so much for your live stream report on this Contessa

Gncq · 30/10/2018 08:00

^pri-trans is obvs pro-trans

ContessaGoesMarchingDOWNTOHELL · 30/10/2018 08:57

I can't find her on Twitter unfortunately; I saw the information on Rosa's timeline. If you search for Alyssa Black by name on Twitter then you get one mention of her by Kristina and then a lot of rather rude hits that I do NOT believe to be relevant Shock

OP posts:
ContessaGoesMarchingDOWNTOHELL · 30/10/2018 09:42

Oh wait, spotted her now. She's said nothing about the event that I can see...

Interesting - and worrying - that none of the pro-GRA people invited were willing to engage in the debate. And yet Steven Whittle is quoted in the Guardian today saving that they are being silenced (DARVO much?).
No-show invitees included: Stephen Whittle, Alex Sharpe, Stonewall, Alyssa Henley, Sally Hines, Peter Dunne Law, UKTELI, Zowie Davy and others. AIBU to think that they maybe don't have an argument to stand on?

PurpleOva · 30/10/2018 12:59

It's not just not having an argument to stand on, but not being willing to engage and attempt to come up with a solution to broach the divide.

There isn't much point debating I both parties are entrenched with no objective to find common ground and a solution that works for everybody.

Debate means listening to the other side.

Excellent note taking by Contessa. This sounds like a good meeting and one which could be replicated in other venues, too. I'd certainly like to hear those speakers. The other side does need to show up though, ffs. I mean, if you are worried about feminists wanting you not to 'exist', you would think you would make an effort to prove you do 😀😀

NannyMcWhatThe · 30/10/2018 20:17

I was there too and this was a really good discussion. Comtessa’s report is very accurate! It was a reasonable and respectful debate - especially interesting to hear Kristina’s contribution. I hope this can be replicated, ideally with speakers from the other side, but I seriously doubt it will be. Thanks to Rosa Freedman and all the speakers.
