Some of you may have seen the photo that's been doing the rounds on Twitter of Julie Bindel and Emma Humphreys on the day of EH's release from prison. The picture really moved me and made me want to take more practical action to be a better feminist.
What can ordinary women do to be better feminists? I talk to my children about it; I donate money to appropriate charities when I can; I have a particular line in mildly objecting when men refer to grown women as 'girl'. Feel like I could do more. What do Mumsnet sisters do to be practical feminists?

I think the best thing we can do is to educate, starting with the people you live with. Daughters, sons, husbands, siblings... Be prepared to stick your flag on that hill and to defend it to the death. Speak out when you see or hear misogyny. Stand shoulder to shoulder with those who share the cause. Be the phenomenal woman you are and spread the word. We will not be silenced. We're also really good at multi-tasking and that's the thing that REALLY scares them.

I've started relentlessly posting feminist stuff on facebook. I'm sure I've been muted by lots of people but fuck 'em. I do get occasional feedback from people I haven't expected to agree with me, and they've said they always read the links.

This morning my son and I sat down and looked at Dungeons and Dragons art and discussed which depictions were respectful to women (and men). We agreed he will play feminist DnD 😂

Would welcome suggestions for practical offline action though. Volunteering. Letter writing. Fundraising. Not just keyboard warrior stuff.

Start with your nearest Womens Centre.

Polynerd · 27/10/2018 18:31

Thanks all. I'm definitely going to try to meet my MP, maybe with a couple of other women.

Subscribe to the guilty feminist podcast. That helps.

I started to gently challenge sexism at work by shouting #everydaysexism whenever anyone says anything questionable.

Polynerd · 27/10/2018 23:04

Shall have a look redexpat, thanks

Is there a local feminist group in your area that you could join? They may well have activities on the go already. I campaign against sex entertainment licences (lap dancing clubs) in my home city and have done for ten years. We had a lot when I moved to the area and now we only have two. I would like to do more to educate people about the Nordic model of prostitution. If that’s something you feel passionately about, you could check out Object (I think the website is Objectnow or something like that). If there’s a feminist group that needs support, you could join them and be a trustee or use your skills to support them in other ways. You could join A Woman’s Place and help them organise their meetings. My feminist group had sub-groups because we had so much going on and each group had lots of small actions that they were progressing. It worked well. Good luck with getting involved more. It’s great to hear that you want to do more and have the energy to do so.

Listen to women.

Vitalogy · 28/10/2018 01:30

Try not to run other women down, even if you don't agree with them.

Learn how to ignore trolls, and continue doing your best to inform yourself and others. A day doesn't go by when you can't stand up for women.

Whompthatwillow · 28/10/2018 06:39

There is a huge amount of sexism in my workplace. I am middle management and I mentor women to progress and I am a prolific emailer to smt about the discrimination in the workplace. Are there women in work that you can help to succeed?
