Voting for a feminist-man or woman?

I’m in Ireland and we have a presidential election today. The President in Ireland is very much a figurehead role representing the country rather than a prime minister/leader type role so I am not as invested in who wins. But I want to vote and I am still reading up on the candidates. I decided to establish their views about feminist issues and the 6 candidates were interviewed. There are 2 women and 4 men running and all but one declare themselves feminists. Do you wise ladies think a man can be a ‘better’ feminist than a women or should the women always be given the benefit of the doubt as she has more in common than me as a woman. I will not vote for one of the women because of her political leanings and am a bit meh about the other-purely based on all of their responses in the article below which one would you vote for?? MN You decide Smile

No, think for your self.

Own your vote.

AssassinatedBeauty · 26/10/2018 16:13

Quite.

I would only vote for the person who I believed actually represented my views, regardless of their sex. If there was a choice of more than one of those, then I would likely choose any female candidate.

ILuvBirdsEye · 26/10/2018 16:13

Think for yourself...

But regarding who can be a better feminist... it's someone who gets it and isn't just after the badge. I am very wary of people who claim to be feminists.

Fallingirl · 26/10/2018 16:16

Too many politicians call themselves feminists. It doesn’t mean anything. So I’d go by whose policies match your own best.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 26/10/2018 16:21

If you go by the candidate's sex alone you could end up with someone like Thatcher.

I'd go on policies over sex and if a candidate claims to be a feminist I'd want to know what they'd done for women.

I'd be put off Peter Casey who says that he's not a feminist because he doesn't discriminate by favouring men or women. I don't think he understands what a feminist is Hmm

Juells · 26/10/2018 17:49

I've voted for Michael D because he's the devil we know. I heard Casey on the radio last week, being asked his views on abortion and he ran with the hare and hunted with the hound.

I'd normally vote for a woman if at all possible, but didn't like either of the female candidates.

Not in something as important as a President election, but I have voted just for the women when I didn't know their politics - eg Local council, voted for two I knew and made up numbers with women

ZenaThor · 26/10/2018 19:08

Thanks for your comments - Escolar I agree with your assessment of PC.
loveyouradvice that was my first instinct and juells I feel the same and am disappointed by the female candidates.

I get owning your vote and I have never struggled with who to vote for ever before and not voting at all seems counterproductive and against all I stand for. I decided to concentrate on feminism as they don’t have much power to effect change and at least if it’s someone in place whose ideals somewhat match my own I would be happier. It is so difficult when I have no feelings about any of them!

And I agree all of those stating they are feminists are I thinking playing to their audience as it was the national women’s council of Ireland that posed the questions.

Off to do a quick google of their views on abortion how ‘woke’ they are on other topics.

Yeah, that's the same kind of gobshittery he went on with when asked about abortion. Not willing to say anything that might cost him the vote of an eighty-year-old from Termonfecken.

RTE are going to have exit polls after 9 I think

Juells · 27/10/2018 08:47

Well, Michael D creamed the opposition it looks like.

Although with such a tiny sample I don't know how they can claim that the poll results are accurate to within 3%.
