That is a good piece. I know I've said this elsewhere today but it's interesting to look at the Barbican's Modern Couples exhibition where a fair amount of the exhibition showcases early C20 attitudes to queer identity, homophobia, homosexuality, and lesbianism.
Using trans status as masculine women or feminised men seems to have been a radical thought by sexologists of the time (e.g., Edward Carpenter) as a social end-run around institutionalised homophobia. (My currently oversimplified version of some of the material and the approaches embedded in it)
And, of course, there are some countries, notably Iran, where it's more socially acceptable (for which to read, enforced by officialdom) to undergo reassignment surgery than to acknowledge homosexual or lesbian attractions.
