Cognitive dissonance or what?

She was just tackled about it on Today. Wriggled out of it though.

"Tory MP Maria Miller, the committee’s chairman, said: ‘Sexual harassment in public places is a regular experience for many women and girls in the street, in bars and clubs, on buses and trains, at university and online."

and some then duck into the women's toilets to escape.

LizzieSiddal · 23/10/2018 09:01

She was asked just now on a Radio 4, whether she and the committee had failed to realise how frightened women were by the thought of self id. She managed to completely ignore the question (asked twice) and carried on saying how important it was to make life easier for trans people. She did say that it was now up to the govt to analyse the consultation and see which way they go.

Resign!

What a piece of work she is.

Redkeyboard · 23/10/2018 09:38

Didn’t hear it but thanks to Radio 4 for doing some proper journalism and asking questions.

QuentinWinters · 23/10/2018 09:46

I'd quite like to discuss the report actually. I think it's good that someone is advocating cracking down on porn.
For example it says in the Independent (as I hate the mail)
For example, the committee said, there is a proven link between pornography and "sexist attitudes and sexually aggressive behaviours, including violence".
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/public-sexual-harassment-women-girls-uk-government-policies-parks-streets-women-equalities-committee-a8596541.html

We are not going to help ourselves if we ignore what other pro-trans feminists say on matters like pornography. I'm pleased that Maria Miller is talking about this.

LizzieSiddal · 23/10/2018 11:29

They dismissed the report on women’s hour. It’s the first item of the programme.

LizzieSiddal · 23/10/2018 11:35

Sport that should be “They discussed the report..” not dismissed!

birdbandit · 23/10/2018 11:41

When pro hard core porn activists are also campaigning for self ID, redefining women's rights, then someone should be asking questions.

scepticalwoman · 23/10/2018 11:43

Dreadful MP. It's a shame that such an important topic is being fronted by someone who is doing so much damage to women and legislation.

Having said that, it's about time that the government started taking seriously the issue of harassment - it's not as if there isn't the evidence available.

Payfrozen · 23/10/2018 11:46

Sorry for double posting this here and on the other MM thread.
The Radio 4 interview was a bit of proper journalism, not letting MM off the hook.

It went something like

Interviewer - Did the committee fail to realise the concerns of women about making self ID easier and safe spaces?

MM - Not making it easier. Removing need for medical diagnosis.

Interviewer - Easier in terms of shorter and less bureacratic.

MM - More humane.

Interviewer - Well that's a matter of opinion.

I was alone in the car but I whooped at that. Yes indeed opinions are allowed. Even on BBC. Hurray.

When pressed about failing to acknowledge concerns MM said the select committee had started a debate which is good and then added they had made recommendations about how trans issues are dealt with in school.

jellyfrizz · 23/10/2018 12:11

I growled at the radio when she spoke about the report they put forward "promoted an import debate" such bollocks! The prevailing attitude at the time was 'no debate'.

She dismissed concerns raised at the time: “The only negative reaction that I’ve seen has been by individuals purporting to be feminists”.

She also said: "We made more than 30 recommendations, one of which was the Gender Recognition Act".

Yes. And others were changing 'gender reassignment' to 'gender identity' in the Equality Act which would make 'sex' pointless as a protected characteristic and also removing single-sex exemptions from the Equality Act.

"Best equality laws in the world" indeed.

LizzieSiddal · 23/10/2018 14:07

I hope Maria Miller is left in no doubt that the media are now onto her and she will be questioned about the bullshit, her committee is proposing.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 23/10/2018 14:14

Self ID aside, I'm delighted to hear this. I think porn is causing a major public health crisis and if the government is prepared to consider it as such that's a massive, massive breakthrough.

OlennasWimple · 23/10/2018 14:14

There was a very frustrating piece on Vanessa Feltz on Radio 2 this lunch time

They were discussing the idea that it shouldn't be OK to view porn in public places such as a bus or train and transport providers could take steps such as blocking access to porn sites. One of the talking heads supported this, and was making the case that it's a form of harassment for women and it's something that should be kept for private consumption. The other woman was a screechy handmaiden (I use both those terms deliberately) who started by talking about liberty and policing what we use our private screens for but quickly descended into "this is women making themselves victims" rhetoric including dismissing #MeToo as "women complaining about someone brushing their knee in 1972"
