Regardless of whether or not someone 'deserves' to be in prison, dehumanising and bullying behaviour should not be tolerated, especially not by prison staff.

This obviously applies to men's prisons, as well as women's prisons. Many people who go to prison have a history of mental health problems pre-dating their prison sentence, and those who don't are probably highly likely to develop mental health problems if they are subjected to such degrading treatment.

It's one of the reasons that I'd really like a web chat with the likes of Richard Garside and Frances Crook to see what their idea of a root and branch reform of the Criminal Justice system with respect to this would look like.

Staff should not be bullying inmates. Of they can't separate their emotions from the job in hand to the point they bully inmates they shouldn't be doing the job.

But also they should also have the resources they need to do their jobs.

Whatever crime person has committed their punishment is the prison. It is not for inmates or staff to add to that . People should he kept safe. And have the basics such as food and water etc.

I think in the case of some prison staff, the very fact of wanting the job should almost disqualify them from having it. Specifically, I mean the sort of people who get off on having power over someone else. And sadly, some sadistic bastards will always be drawn to prison or care jobs for that reason.

A large majority of the people in prison are people with a deprived upbringing, mental health issues and/or mild learning difficulties. They need support and firm boundaries without degradation.

I also expect that those who want to do the job and are decent and honest etc find it incredibly hard to do it when hands are probably very firmly tied.

If conditions are shit for staff you won't hold on to the good ones. Only the ones who get the "fun" out of it
