Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

What can we do?!

I’ve always been a hardened feminist, but on the back of the months discussing and thinking about self-ID and the eye opening of exactly how far women’s fight for equality is from being recognised, and having spent tonight reading about Julie Bindel and being inspired by her proactive approach to fighting for women, I feel restless.

I want to do something, not just talk about it. What can I do? What groups can I join, movements I can help?

I'd like to know too. It's not like there's an obvious political party to join 🤔.

you could read all the 100s of threads on what people are doing. or you could read around this see other perspectives

GatheringHerBrows · 21/10/2018 23:16

I've read far too much already TBH 😄. I find all of this a bit of a rabbit hole.

I’m a Labour Party councillor and most of my colleagues agree with our view of this, but we are being let down by the leadership. I am taking a motion regarding reform of the GRA to both the Council & CLP next month in the hope it’ll spur others to do the same, if it gets passed. I only regret it’s taken me so many months to have the courage to do so.

So I am politically active regarding women’s rights, but I want to do more.

I’ve been reading the threads of this board every day for months/years. It still seems impossible to do anything once you’ve exhausted the speaking to people in real life, encouraging people to fill out the consultation etc.

And I don’t just mean with regards to the trans debate, but feminism in general.

Wow, Courage, good luck 🙂. Let us know how it goes.

I've spoken to a few people about this, it's always a bit daunting. People generally haven't heard of it though.

Good luck courage.

Once informed about the issue, we can write to councils - crucial
Get transgender trend pack into schools
Talk about it, make it normal to talk about
Write to MPs
Watch MN like a hawk for surveys, studies, consultations - complete them
Challenge self ID everywhere
Writing to companies that adopt self ID
If you boycott, write and explain why
Leafleting - hopefully FPFW will make some non-consultstion leaflets we can do door to door, or we can make our own
If we are in groups that do talks or hold discussions, introduce GC ideas eg book clubs - a GC author, or book
Look out for trans conferences and events and go to them
Identify as non binary when asked for gender

WrongSideOfHistory · 21/10/2018 23:31

Good luck courage. I left the Labour Party over this issue and it's good to know the people at a local issue are raising concerns

Couragetocourage · 21/10/2018 23:35

Thank you.

Identify as non binary when asked for gender. A couple of women have suggested this to me but I worry that it will be seen by the powers that be as evidence that so many people are identifying as it that it should become a legal third option?

Loads of members have left Wrong, and while I accept & understand the decision it does make me despair. If all the GC people leave the Party, we have absolutely no chance of changing its policy.

I don't really want to be a politician myself so I'm not offering and as a giraffe I would lack the credibility and my 5 foot neck wouldn't fit in many venues

But has anyone considered starting a party? Would Posie? Someone on here?
