The Guilty Feminist

Anyone else read this? I downloaded it on my Kindle after reading about it in the Sunday Times. In the intro she refers to herself as a feminist who believes trans women are women. She also calls women ciswomen.

I closed the page and decided this book wasn’t for me.
I wanted to complain to Amazon and get a refund. None of this has been mentioned in the reviews of the book. Is it that nobody cares or is it that they are afraid to comment?

Remember to review it before you ask Amazon for a refund.

Great, I will do. I buy loads of books per month and read lots but never review.

I think Deborah Frances-White is very funny but I'm afraid there was too much men who identify as women are women on her podcasts of the same name so this isn't a surprise - definitely write a review to forewarn others (maybe link FairPlayForWomen). Same issue in Helena Kennedy's latest book I believe.

BigotedWoman · 21/10/2018 21:29

Deborah is woke. A lot of GF listeners are woke so if she didn't put it there would be outrage tbh.

I heard her on another podcast recently promoting the book and she didn't describe herself as cisgender so I thought perhaps there was hope but I'm not sure.

thatdamnwoman · 21/10/2018 21:31

Is she even a feminist? I don't know: listened to maybe half-a-dozen podcasts and thought it was the usual women-talking-themselves-down stuff.

RitaFairclough · 21/10/2018 21:39

I abandoned the book quite near the end when the chapter on period poverty didn’t mention women or girls once. I also missed out the chapter with Reubs Walsh who I find insufferable.

I love DFW and I like the podcast a lot but the devotion to being woke does make me wince.

I often feel, though, that it is sort of paying lip service to the trans ‘cause’ and then it gets on with the business of being feminist.

I also adore Grace Petrie who is often on the podcast. She is outspoken about horrible TERFs but I have a weird trust that she will soon realise that we are all on the same side - listen to her Black Tie song. It’s brilliant apart from the reference to TERFs. (I also know if she read this she would be cross with me but hey ho)

I love the podcast, but DFW often ties herself in knots trying to be “woke”. I did stop listening to one episode when a guest when on a rant about “evil anti-trans lesbians disrupting Pride”.

A lot of her audience seem to be young women, who are of the liberal feminist bent, so perhaps she needs to keep that demographic on-side.

I suppose her background in a separatist religious organisation might give her a natural sympathy with people seen as outsiders.

I’m not giving up on DFW though, because I have so much respect for her support of aid to the refugee crisis in Calais.

I used to listen to this podcast and even went to the show at the fringe one year but the wokeness just got to much for me so I unsubscribed and let them know why. It was a shame cause it was really funny in parts but I just couldn't take the wokeness anymore
