Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The BBC has replied to my complaint about Woman's Hour

FloPen · 19/10/2018 15:09

'We raised your concerns with the Woman's Hour team, who have responded:

"Woman's Hour's topical discussion looked at the issues raised by the government's consultation on the Gender Recognition Act 2004 in the week that the consultation closes.

We take our responsibility to be impartiality very seriously and the complexity of this many sided debate was reflected in the broad range of views and experiences of guests on the programme. In addition to the studio guests we included many listener emails reflecting their opinions, thus enabling audiences to hear a wide range of views included in this programme.

The lawyer Natalie Gamble has her own independent law firm which specialises in family law. She has expertise in the law relating to LGBTQ issues alongside expertise in fertility and general family law."

Thanks again for getting in touch.'

and fuck off

wot bollox

Redkeyboard · 19/10/2018 15:16

They invited on a lawyer associated with a lobby group with a controversial one sided view, and who ignored and denied legal issues outlined by other legal experts including a barrister recently speaking in the House of Lords. They didn’t even acknowledge different views or challenge. The difference is critical to your view on the consultation which is still open.

Their reply addresses none of those issues

TeenTimesTwo · 19/10/2018 15:17

many listener emails ? Hmm

FloPen · 19/10/2018 15:19

how can I boycott the BBC. Are there alternatives. This and watching QT has done my head in.
I'll be on Feedback at 4.30, where they are covering WH. I will probably sound like a mad old bag and do the cause no good at all.

OP posts:
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/10/2018 15:21

I believe that if the BBC reply is inadequate you can take it to ofcom?

lottiegarbanzo · 19/10/2018 15:21

'to be impartiality'? They're so flustered they've lost the ability to write English!

tobee · 19/10/2018 15:38

"Many sided debate "? Yeah, no, not really. There's two.

GatheringHerBrows · 19/10/2018 15:43

Flo, good luck when you go on Feedback! I'm going to listen.

I wonder if WH will reply to my complaint 🤔.

citykat · 19/10/2018 16:39

The programme R4 on just now (4.35 sorry don't know what it is called but it is like points view but for radio 4) featured criticism of women's hour, had an annoying quote from Adrian Harrop and then an angry woman saying he coverage was biased. The presenter said they'd asked WH for a comment but they had not wanted to participate. WH is scared!

citykat · 19/10/2018 16:40

Flopen ha- it was you the angry woman! Brilliant! Feedback it was. Well done.

GatheringHerBrows · 19/10/2018 16:42

Flo, if that was you - I'm not scared, I'm angry - then Yay, well done 😄🙌🏻.

FloPen · 19/10/2018 16:46

yes, I am [permanently] angry woman. Will have to NC now. The WH response was EXACTLY the same as the one they sent to me. I am going to complain to OFCOM. possibly I have too much free time.

OP posts:
Trousered · 19/10/2018 16:50

It was interesting how annoyed the feedback presenter was that WH wouldn't engage with them.

WH has been kicked into submission by the angry men.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 19/10/2018 16:51

Yes, I've had the same reply. It's pathetic. I need to get my arse in gear and contact Ofcom.

MsMcWoodle · 19/10/2018 16:53

I heard you too. You were great. I'm cancelling my direct debit and they can chase me for the money.

FloPen · 19/10/2018 16:54

I've gone on OFCOM and they say that you have to
'Other than in exceptional circumstances, Ofcom only considers complaints about BBC programmes where the complainant has already complained to the BBC and completed the BBC’s complaints process, having escalated the complaint to the BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit and received a final response from them. When you reach our complaint form you will be asked for details of the BBC’s investigation and a BBC reference number.'
so am off to do that

Procrastinator1 · 19/10/2018 16:55

Flo, great. Interesting the WH editorial team wouldn't come on and comment. Dr Haddock though.

thereallochnessmonster · 19/10/2018 16:56

I complained about a BBC news article recently - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-45589563.

I got a pretty crappy reply:

Thank you for getting in touch about our article reporting that campaigners opposed to a council motion about Liverpool's transgender community have been accused of "intimidation" and "abuse" by the city's mayor.

We amended this sentence to now simply refer to “women” because “cisgender women” may not be widely understood by readers.

No understanding, no apology for using 'cis' or writing a hideously biased article. Fuck off, Auntie Beeb!

GatheringHerBrows · 19/10/2018 17:04

I really want an angry woman t-shirt now.

GatheringHerBrows · 19/10/2018 17:05

Angry woman
Definition: Adult human female who has had enough of men

Melamin · 19/10/2018 17:13

Well done you Flo for braving Feedback. I am very surprised that WH would not go on - they are usually very biased in their favour (listened to too many Archers fans put up as hilarity fodder).

FloPen · 19/10/2018 17:13

i want an Angry Woman superhero suit.
Does WH have a time in the week when they read listeners letters?

OP posts:
AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 19/10/2018 17:32

Their reply addresses none of those issues

I find this with the BBC... they don't engage in any issues you raise because if they did they'd have to admit you have a point. So they just spout some standard rubbish. It's not that they are intellectually challenged; this is a matter of faith and belief.

PersonWithAVulva · 19/10/2018 20:42

Dear Ms X

Thank you for contacting us regarding Newsnight on October 10.

We realise you felt it was not appropriate to have Sophie Cook as the sole guest in the section on the Wellcome Collection’s recent treatment of inclusive language.

Sophie Cook was invited to speak as a writer and broadcaster, with experience on the topic of inclusive language. Newsnight welcomes a variety of views and representatives over time. While some may not like what they hear or who offers the opinion, it’s important to consider all perspectives in due time. A broad range of contributors are regularly involved in our items on gender and inclusivity.

Some viewers have expressed concern over her comments on including women of colour, however at this point Sophie was referring to another alternative spelling - ‘womyn’ – and how this was seen by some females to be elitist and exclusive, not ‘women’.

We hope this explains our approach - we appreciate your feedback.

Audience reaction can inform our ongoing work and we value the time you've taken to get in touch.

Kind Regards

------

My complaint was not about Sophie Cook, though I did mention as a side note that there should have been an actual woman on. My complaint was about the outright racism, which they have attempted to explain away as if I just got it wrong or whatever Hmm

PersonWithAVulva · 19/10/2018 20:42

Oh, mine was about news night, not womans hour
