This was great. I was incredibly disappointed by the Adam Wagner thread, as despite the even-handed tone he tried to put on, he had clearly failed to research properly and therefore failed to engage with the concerns people have expressed about the GRA. How anyone intelligent can say "society's definitions of sex and gender are changing and that's a good thing" as if sex is something you can redefine like a new Shakespeare adaptation, is beyond me... So it was enormously encouraging to see RadFemLawyer's thread and I thank her from the bottom of my heart. Also the link someone posted somewhere to Julian Norman's speech at the House of Lords, making the links between the GRA and the Equality Act, and with Article 9 of the European Convention of Human Rights (e.g. people should not be forced to say something they believe is untrue). womansplaceuk.org/julian-norman-in-house-of-lords/
We are going to be in for a lot of legal and public communications work post GRA consultation. I think we can expect full-on political onslaughts against the Equality Act which will make the current debate about the GRA look like a dolly's tea party. If those attacks succeed, then even more women will be abused and squeezed out of public and civil life. We have to remember who to hold to account - primarily the politicians for sure, but to some degree also human rights organisations and legal commentators who entirely overlook the human rights of women to safety, to free expression, to self-organisation, even to self-definition, will have played their part. So, in for the long haul.
