I've just heard PM on the radio denying she's resigning over Brexit. Which could mean she is hmm]

I wonder what happens to the consultation if she does resign.

Apologies if this has already been discussed somewhere, but has there been any more news on the government inquiry into the massive rise in girls identifying as trans?

It will be interesting to see what happens with this. This issue needs proper academic research. There are a few academics who work on this, but they’ve been sidelined by academic institutions and are the subject of sustained and nasty campaigns by TRAs who claim that to investigate this amounts to conversion therapy. Simply put, the government and universities have allowed a situation to emerge where research is being suppressed at precisely the moment when society needs it most.

kesstrel · 16/10/2018 17:39

What worries me is that they will choose researchers already biased toward a mermaids-style belief system. You can't rely on what teenage girls say themselves, so would have to rely on "expert" opinions. I'm trying to think how you could design a quantitative study, and can't think of anything obvious. If we had solid statistics on the numbers of young women identifying as lesbians 10 years ago, and could show that had gone down, maybe? But that relies on having that previous data.

Still, I suppose just having a serious discussion of possible alternative explanations to "they're obviously trans" might help.

bluetitsaretits · 16/10/2018 18:18

That's my worry too- it will either be carried out by those who follow the pre-approved line of thinking and unbiased studies not permitted.
With Penny Mordaunt leaving perhaps there's a chance her replacement will do a more thorough job- here's hoping. Maybe this will be a good thing to push when contacting MPs after the consultation ends.

R0wantrees · 16/10/2018 18:52

There's also the issue of a snap election to consider.

bluetitsaretits · 16/10/2018 19:46

Oh god yes- all the more reason to try and work with any labour MPs that will listen.

Imnobody4 · 16/10/2018 19:49

Labour Mps are a lost cause. I really wish Justine Greening hadn't been moved, think she was starting to soft pedal.

vicviking · 16/10/2018 19:56

A snap election would leave the GC with such an awful choice. Labour probably wouldn't bother with the results of the consultation and just try to whip self id through.

This was Victoria Atkins, the women's minister, interviewed in the D Telegraph in August.

papersmile · 16/10/2018 20:09

I don't think there is any chance that Penny Mordaunt will resign.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 16/10/2018 20:12

I think if Labour wins a snap election then we have lost. But then, women will be in the shit if Labour wins for all kinds of reasons.

AngryAttackKittens · 16/10/2018 20:17

That's great and all, but I'm sure some other bastard is about to pick up where she leaves off.

bluetitsaretits · 16/10/2018 20:20

You're right countess but I will keep working on my female labour MP as she couldn't commit to the parliamentary drop in, but wasn't just TW=W . If there's enough time to pressure MPs it might help -long shot I know, but don't know what else to do!

transdimensional · 16/10/2018 21:05

When people say Labour MPs are a lost cause, I understand the frustration but it's not true (and is no way to win a campaign?).
On page 5 of the ComRes poll of MPs ( www.comresglobal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/MPs-and-Transgender-Issues-October-2018-Tables.pdf ) we see that while 50% of Labour MPs favour self-id, 27% disagree and the rest don't know.

R0wantrees · 16/10/2018 21:09

I think its a case of keeping talking to all MPs.

There are more and more reasons for them to listen.

Rumbledore · 16/10/2018 21:20

Transdimensional thanks for sharing the stats. They look terrifying!

I wrote to my MP (who I agree with on practically nothing - strange feeling to be on the same side) and got back a really positive email. I mentioned PM refusing to meet any women’s groups and his response was: ‘...it does not surprise me that the Minister has refused to meet those who are opposed to her plans because she tends to be a little arrogant.’ Says it all really.

bluetitsaretits · 16/10/2018 21:54

Those stats are very interesting -thanks.
At least it shows not all of them are buying into self ID completely. We just have to keep pushing I guess.
