An Irish woman speaks.

Apologies if this has already been discussed on here but saw it on Twitter tonight and thought it deserved a mention. We’ve been told that Self ID has already happened in Ireland and there’s been no problems with it. Well this Irish woman here begs to differ...

Found this quite distressing - the sense of isolation, of not knowing how to deal with the situations she finds herself. Noticed Owen Jones saying how 'sad' it was that GC types seem to have nothing better to do than rant about trans issues. The comparison with that easy assumption and one woman's reality is telling.

GalwayGalery · 14/10/2018 21:49

There most definitely is a problem in Ireland, but women's rights here are even less important than in the UK. No one here cares enough to report on it. It'll come out eventually, as a magazine piece in a 'wow -can you believe that happened in my life time' article.

(I share my time between Dublin and UK).

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 14/10/2018 22:31

Thanks for posting. This is really important. It illustrates the Orwellian situation in which outlawing discussion of problems and removing the language required to discuss them means that there are no problems.

ludog · 15/10/2018 08:11

All you ever see in the press over here is the 'brave and stunning' narrative. I've never seen anything even vaguely GC in either print or online media.

StillAFeminist · 15/10/2018 08:38

It takes decades in Ireland for systemic abuses affecting women to be reported. It's about 40 years too soon to be saying there's no problem with self id in Ireland Sad

indieshuffle · 15/10/2018 09:17

Horrible. I find it distressing too. Millions of women could find ourselves outsiders.

The story in the Irish Times where the barber who only cuts men's hair was sued and fined 5000 for 'mistaking' a transman for a woman is scary.

Why must they try to keep it a secret? And make us all tread on eggshells, afraid to speak normally. Yes, I know because of their feelz but it is so darkly oppressive. It isn't right.

hackmum · 15/10/2018 09:22

The batshit thing about that Irish Times case is that it's apparently perfectly legal for a barber to say he only cuts men's hair, not women's, but illegal to refuse to cut a transman's hair. Why is it legal to discriminate against women but not against transmen? Where the f is the logic in that?

OvaHere · 15/10/2018 09:27

I think this is one of the reasons it's so important that British women pushback and hold the line on this issue. It will embolden and give hope to women in countries that have poorer women's rights overall and had self ID pushed through by stealth. Hopefully more will feel they can come forward and point out how it isn't all rosy after all.

Panti-fucking-bliss and drag artists in every second ad on TV 😠

(climbs off hobbyhorse)

I'm completely out on my facebook page now, if anyone doesn't like it they can fuck the fuck off. I re-post just about every post of Posie's, and newspaper articles. I have very few FB friends, though, about 35. It sounds as if the woman who did the article on Women's Place has too many random people who aren't really friends. I'd recommend pruning her Friends list!

I absolutely fucking hate the fact that every single feminist organisation in Ireland has to trumpet their fucking inclusiveness on their website. Like that's what women were put on this earth for, to support men's little idiosyncrasies and validate them in their delusions.

Redshoeblueshoe · 15/10/2018 10:02

I'm glad she mentioned the open letter to British feminists.

ludog · 15/10/2018 10:22

I missed that case about the barber. From the photo I would have assumed butch woman as would most people I should imagine. It's batshit and infuriating that we have to pretend to collude in other people's delusions.

There most definitely is a problem in Ireland, but women's rights here are even less important than in the UK. No one here cares enough to report on it.

It's part and parcel of the whole culture that thought it was OK to lock sinful women away out of sight. It's easier to be virtue-signalling and be on the men's side (gay, drag or trans) than to see things from women's POV and recognise their (justified) fear. It's just a continuation of the mindset that no man had anything to do with unmarried women getting pregnant.

pachyderm · 15/10/2018 11:29

Those fools bending over backwards to please men..every single feminist org centring men, policing their language, fawning over these narcissistic bullies who don't give a shit about women's issues. Even the so called Irish Feminist Network Bookclub's latest read is Juno Dawson ffs.

Follow @IResisters we are out there.

pachyderm · 15/10/2018 11:40

Juells I remembers the pro choice movement of the 90s, and gay men had very little interest or involvement. Which is grand; they had a lot of their own issues - the AIDS crisis and decriminalisation which happened very late here. It does gall me though when I see Colm O'Gorman and Panti wading into Repeal the 8th telling women how to run their campaign, or mouthing off about "te*fs". Or straight cross dressers joining in under the LGBT umbrella to attack women from that angle, and no-one from the movement reining them in or distancing themselves.

It's just males. Male aggression, narcissism and domination. All of it.

ludog · 17/10/2018 16:16

If you can face the inevitable blood pressure spike, have a listen to Sean Moncrief today. He's interviewing brave and stunning Rachel McKinnon on her landmark gold medal. I don't think I've ever shouted "fuck off" at a radio so many times!! Also a fluffy piece in the Indo today about trans children. I think that's just in the print edition, I couldn't find a link online.
