Well this is excellent timing with the butterfly program being on in about an hour. Thank you Jo the voice of common sense and reason. She clearly shows that it's not transphobic to raise these issues it's just basic common sense.

Brilliant and sums up what I think.

Cuntysnark · 14/10/2018 19:56

I agree but think 18-20 is still too young.

AncientLights · 14/10/2018 19:56

^Everyone's so angry. Trans people feel they're being got at, women feel vulnerable, and actually the issue is it's not really about either of them.

'It's about a third group posing as transgender people to get at women^
(Italics fail)

Doesn't make sense Jo. It IS about women feeling vulnerable because of the third group posing as trans to get at women. So the only group there it actually isn't about is transgender people.

Whatsnewwithyou · 14/10/2018 20:03

I agree with you @AncientLights but apart from that I think the article is good.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 14/10/2018 20:08

It's about all three groups Jo, the third are scared of the second and the first are refusing to admit they exist.

mimivanne · 14/10/2018 20:08

Jo is in the Times today, sounds like the same article.

I think she is being as clear as she dare be ,there are so few others wiling to put their heads above the parapet

Redkeyboard · 14/10/2018 20:10

Great article completely agree and thanks Jo for speaking up.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 14/10/2018 20:12

She's dipping a second toe in.

It's welcome, if still slightly lily-livered.

YourVagesty · 14/10/2018 20:19

I do love Jo Brand.

Bonions

The Guardian piece on Rupert Everett is from June 2016

scepticalwoman · 14/10/2018 20:24

A sensible article (and well received judging by the comments)

People are starting to see the pressure being put on children for what it is - grooming.

Bonions · 14/10/2018 20:28

Sorry, that’ll teach me to skim read!

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 14/10/2018 20:30

The Guardian seem to have realised, over the course of a month, that public opinion of self ID isn't what they were led to believe.

Starlight345 · 14/10/2018 20:35

I completely agree with her .

VMisaMarshmallow · 14/10/2018 20:38

18-20 is fine if that’s the starting point where they go to the gp to get referred for counciling to start exploring their dysphoria for the 2+ years most therapy is recommended for prior to looking at ‘living’ as the opposite gender then starting the hormone etc transitioning after a solid time living as the prefered gender.

18-20 to get hormone blockers and other irreversible changes is madness.

Self id law makes the chance of safe slow transitioning zilch, if there will be any medical or mental health transitioning available at all, given that all it will take to change gender is signing a form then zero medical treatment necessary.

OvaHere · 14/10/2018 20:45

I think The Guardian might just be arse covering by throwing out a few last minute tame articles so they can't be accused at a later date of bias and non existent coverage of a government consultation issue that has become hugely politically relevant .

Ekphrasis · 14/10/2018 20:47

Actually, I think the whole brains still developing till 25 should be more embraced more in society so perhaps older from my POV, however at 18 you can vote so I couldn't reasonably stop my child I feel at that age.

And yes the bit where she said there's 2 angry groups when the issue is the third group is a hit off - I think I know what she's getting at (predators) but doesn't acknowledge the principles of this, nor the issues within sport.

Ekphrasis · 14/10/2018 20:51

Whoa I hadn't known about this article either (linked to Rupert article) serous back tracking from pressure.

It's ok Ian, you were right the first time.

This may be correct.

GulagsMyArse · 14/10/2018 23:41

comments are all in agreement.

ContentiousOne · 14/10/2018 23:43

Jo being sensible suggesting she would want her daughters to make no irreversible decisions before the age of 20 or so, and that she would want them to access serious and careful long term counselling beforehand. That is what responsible parenting looks like.

ouda · 15/10/2018 09:05

Frustrating that none of these sensible articles mention the consultation, however, given the urgency.

I'm sure none of those commenting in the Mail even know there is a consultation about to close on this (very heated) topic.
