I met my MP

Delurking to say I met my MP today (male, Tory, old-school, fairly well-known). It took him a minute to work out what I was on about, clearly no one has raised it with him before. He then went on a rant about the very notion of self-ID being Preposterous! Absurd! Ludicrous! And then paused for breath and asked 'So, what side of the argument are you on?' . I basically couldn't get a word in edgeways but he expressed himself as a feminist and thought women's concerns in general were not given enough prominence in politics. He couldn't understand why anyone would support self-ID and was surprised that 'Penny' (Mordaunt) was championing it. I did shoehorn in that David Davis had been very supportive and been the object of an inquiry for his trouble. He had no idea about the HoC meeting on Tuesday (I'd emailed him about it a week ago) and no intention of going, I tried suggesting someone from his office could go instead.

I left him a copy of the House of Lords speech and the Jan Morris Times article and he promised to read them and said he would vote against self-ID and that 'common sense must prevail'.

I've never met an MP before and done so entirely off the back of this board. I can't say I put in a dazzling performance, I don't think he let me finish a sentence even once so it's a good thing we were on the same side, I'd have been ripped to shreds otherwise! Still, I'm chalking it up as a win of sorts as maybe it will register on his radar in the future. He might even have a chat with Penny .

Also says will not be a swift process and does not anticipate publishing any response until next year.

This is the most interesting bit. Has getting kicked into the long grass written all over it. I think it's clear to them now its a vote loser. Can't see it being pushed through with everything else that's happening.

Probably a good result but we need to address the self id by stealth thing that's happening regardless.

well done Femme I had a meeting with my MP postponed by 4 weeks, by her, (female labour, twaw type) will update in a few weeks. After the appalling 'debate' today where David Davis was the only one speaking any sense-the other women all spouting shite & totally dismissive of womens legitimate concerns, there will be a backlash....they sound ludicrous & people are beginning to realise.

This is very encouraging, OP. I've been putting together my dossier to go and see mine. He is an established MP with a background in law. He also has some clout so I don't want to mess it up, and I'm wondering if I should hold fire in case of an early election, because MPs pretend to listen to their constituents more when they're campaigning?

I wrote to my Labour MP before the close of the consultation very much concentrating on an area she use to be shadow minister for and she also wrote to Penny Mordaunt and I got a copy of the reply this week. The wording was very similar to yours FemmeFatalist.

Thanks everyone! I really didn't think he'd take much notice but he does seem to so am quite proud of myself given activism isn't something I get much chance to do in between toddler wrangling .

Count, good your MP has spoken up too, the more that do the better although I agree the stealth changes are a real issue.

Just a little reminder that the MP is David Davies, not Davis. Two very different Tory MPs! Would hate for your MPs to go and have a little chat with the wrong man.
