BBC to address ‘heteronormative culture’ with LGBT reforms

The BBC is taking action over a perceived “heteronormative culture” at the broadcaster by making LGBT reforms.

Language is to be more inclusive, with non-binary pronouns used by BBC staff where appropriate, as part of internal changes to retain staff and “cut ice” with young viewers.

A network of “straight allies” will be set up to advance the interests of LGBT staff, with badges to identify them, according to a BBC report.

Action is being taken over fears that a “heteronormative culture, particularly around language” was developing within the company, and that the environment was not fully supportive of LGBT staff.

Repeal the percentage of young people identifying as LGB is higher in young people. Mainly in the bi category.

arranfan · 13/10/2018 09:58

I worry about gender neutral language and whether it will affect their reporting:

whether it will affect their reporting

We already know there is no whether about it.

silentcrow · 13/10/2018 10:48

There's certainly a lot of mixed messaging and confused thinking coming out of the beeb. I've just sat through a BBC presentation aimed at education staff and when the (white middle class male) speaker said "gender representation" he absolutely meant it in the context of "showing girls in football" and "boys dancing", but also "we're using football to appeal to boys". So I'm getting "we're ticking diversity boxes whilst still reinforcing gender stereotyping".

Still Hmm at the comment made that seeing a group of children performing activities together to music was "absolutely great, it was like North Korea!" I'm sure it was intended in fun, but in the context of previous comments about 1984 it made me laugh-scowl.

From The Times article today

In addition heterosexual BBC staff will be asked to wear badges identifying themselves as “straight allies” to help their LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) colleagues.

Badges? So the virtue signalling woke are going to be strutting around wearing prefect-style badges? FFS

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 13/10/2018 18:27

Mothr of a gay child here

I would also like to be pointed in the direction of any homophobia i have missed so i can report the shit out of it

Looking forward to hearing from you spanna

AspieAndProud · 13/10/2018 18:44

We don’t need no stinkin’ badges.

Needmoresleep · 13/10/2018 18:53

DHs employer did this. You could have a little rainbow thingy on your work pass.

Apparently there was a clear divide between the young and woke, and old dinasaurs like him. I guess you can't teach an old dinasaur new tricks.

But an issue for Muslim and other culturally conservative staff. It smacks of thought police.

AspieAndProud · 13/10/2018 18:59

I thought this kind of bollocks was what Channel 4 was set up for.

arranfan · 13/10/2018 18:59

You could have a little rainbow thingy on your work pass.

A few weeks back on AIBU somebody posted that her team leader was making this compulsory and she resented it. She was fine with all of the different inclusive and diverse events in her workplace and felt that nobody else mandated symbols on the lanyard so resented that her team leader felt this was OK.

Freespeecher · 13/10/2018 19:46

That was going to be my question - what if you're perfectly happy to live and let live but don't want to wear a rainbow badge?

Oh, and RIP Geoffrey Hayes.

Freespeecher · 13/10/2018 20:21

It's just being nice!

Now use those pronouns.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 13/10/2018 20:25

Needmoresleep, there are plenty of Muslim gay people. What do you mean?

homoseXXualmum · 13/10/2018 20:30

Lots of homophobia in this thread

Could you quote some? Only, I’m a lesbian and I haven’t noticed any.

The only homophobia coms from BBC's policy. Have you seen they want homohsexuals to wear badges with their sexuality? Like that went so well last time this happened in history... can one be any more tone deaf...

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 13/10/2018 20:55

SPANNA

Thought id yell...have they come back with the homophobia reports yet?

Honestly...anyone says anything homophobic in real life when im around im right there with a blistering retort ...take em apart i do

So lay em on me spanna when you have the time obviously!! I skim read so quite often miss stuff

RedToothBrush · 13/10/2018 20:57

What do pronoun badges have to do with whether you are gay or lesbian?

MrGHardy · 13/10/2018 21:05

"a “heteronormative culture, particularly around language” was developing within the company, and that the environment was not fully supportive of LGBT staff."

Developing? Really?

ElenOfTheWays · 13/10/2018 21:20

Help them with what?

Is it just me? Or does this come across as incredibly patronising?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/10/2018 21:27

Or does this come across as incredibly patronising

And alarming. Presumably those who don't wear the badges will be hounded.out.

Of course, the entire concept of ally imo is terrible. Some like the good clown doctor use it as a tool to bully, but most are just sheep that don't even realize their "ally" status is just them thoughtlessly pandering to the demands of others.

TimeLady · 13/10/2018 21:33

Precisely. Watch your back, Jenni Murray.

ElenOfTheWays · 13/10/2018 21:40

Makes me glad I don't have a TV. What a waste of money.

borntobequiet · 13/10/2018 21:42

I blame Michael Gove. No one gave a stuff about pronouns before his educational reforms.

RedToothBrush · 13/10/2018 21:44

As I said. It's all very Blue Peter.
