I hate this expression so much, why not husband and wife, why does the woman’s identity be converted to that of wife? Equality is man and woman or husband and wife, makes my blood boil!!!

Or - (shock) wife and husband?

Exactly Zebra, why does the woman lose her identity but the man stays a man?

They say husband and wife now don't they. Old fashioned the other way.

It is the James I language. Like the Burial service says 'Man that is born of woman has but a short time to live' This obviously means 'man' (ie person' in the old English sense like Wilfman but the marriage service (now changed) in the male sense................. perhaps they were at some sort of crossroads in the 1600s?

Only a very small amount of ceremonies would have the wording 'man and wife' nowadays.
