This, I think, is a list of MPs that voted against the GRA 2004. Some of these are still MPs. Might be worth contacting the ones that are still around?

Thanks.
Mine is on there, I'm going to see him next week

MissHoolee · 11/10/2018 14:11

I didn't know the figures. Surprised it was so one-sided.

Ereshkigal · 11/10/2018 14:31

I read recently that there are websites which teach transsexuals the right things to say when being interviewed by medical professionals. They advise them, basically, on how to cheat; on how to present the classic symptoms of gender dysphoria in order to get the operation they feel they want. I have no doubt that with the growth of cyberspace there will soon be websites advising on the best way to get a gender recognition certificate. We must take steps to limit the scope of that kind of abuse.

Baroness O'Cathain, House of Lords, 2004

QuietContraryMary · 11/10/2018 14:34

Still MPs:

Conservative:
Paul Beresford (Mole Valley)
Christopher Chope (Christchurch)
Jonathan Djanogly (Huntingdon)
Dominic Grieve (Beaconsfield)
Edward Leigh (Gainsborough)
Tim Loughton (East Worthing & Shoreham)
Laurence Robertson (Tewkesbury)
Andrew Rosindell (Romford)
Andrew Selous (SW Beds)
Robert Syms (Poole)

Plus one DUP:

Nigel Dodds (Belfast N)

WTFisawomxn · 11/10/2018 14:43

Baroness O'Cathain should be re-named Cassandra. It appears she really saw some of the problems with this specific issue, from what I've read?

FermatsTheorem · 11/10/2018 14:46

100% of those Labour MPs who showed up voted yes (70.3% turnout). 25 vs 20 Conservatives voted yes (but only 28.8% of them bothered to turn out).

There was a thread last night about the FPFW meeting in the House of Lords yesterday - it's worth bearing in mind that the Lords had some excellent debate on the GRA, in which several lords, Tebbit notable among them (I hate the bastard, but he was spot on on this one), anticipated and predicted pretty much every one of the problems we now see with the GRA.

OvaHere · 11/10/2018 14:56

It actually worries me about the intellect of many of our current MPs. I'm not necessarily a fan, in political terms, of many of the old guard like Tebbit and Widdecombe but at least you have a sense that they were smart and capable of critical thought.

I can hardly think of any that seem up to the basic job spec of political representative these days. Not to mention how cowardly they have all become.

I know there are upsides to social media but I honestly feel that real life politics might improve if they all came off Twitter and Facebook. I think fear of the mob is preventing them doing proper due diligence on a lot of issues.

Ereshkigal · 11/10/2018 15:30

That brings me to my second argument with the hon. Member for Gainsborough. He used the word "choice"—as if one wanders downstairs in the morning, looks in the mirror and suddenly thinks, "I want to be a woman today." That is not how it happens.

Oh really? That so?

Ereshkigal · 11/10/2018 15:31

This. I have utter contempt for most of them, especially the ones who disagree but leave it up to ordinary women to risk their jobs and safety.

OvaHere · 11/10/2018 15:32

Well to be fair they hadn't had the pleasure of meeting Philip Bunce at that point.

Ereshkigal · 11/10/2018 15:32

Sorry, italic fail in the first paragraph.

Ereshkigal · 11/10/2018 15:34

Yes, she made some very salient points, which were largely handwaved away.

QuietContraryMary · 12/10/2018 11:55

"100% of those Labour MPs who showed up voted yes (70.3% turnout). 25 vs 20 Conservatives voted yes (but only 28.8% of them bothered to turn out)."

I suspect that far more Conservatives were opposed but abstained rather than be accused of transphobia.

Manderleyagain · 12/10/2018 12:06

Anybody know if it was a whipped (spelling?) vote for labour? Presumably it was a bill put forward by the labour government so they were all expected to vote it through. Or is that kind of thing based on free conscience?
That will make a difference if there is a vote on changing the act now.

Fermats is that 25 conservatives voted yes, 20 voted no?

QuietContraryMary · 12/10/2018 13:08

Yes, 25 Tories supported the GRA, 20 were against.

The Tory yeses included:

John Bercow (no surprise!)
Crispin Blunt (Reigate)
Peter Bottomley (Worthing W)
Mark Field (Cities of London & Westminister)
Nick Gibb (Bognor Regis)

thatdamnwoman · 12/10/2018 13:12

Going to see my Labour MP tomorrow. Looking at those figures I realise that she probably can't take a GC line even if she wants to.

LassWiADelicateAir · 12/10/2018 13:27

Peter Bottomley (Worthing W)

Generally a liberal on social issues; supported Stella Creasy's initiatives on the NI abortion issue and along with Crispin Blunt voted for changes to decriminalise abortion in The Reproductive Health(Acces to Terminations) Bill , which ultimately failed.

Biologicalreality · 12/10/2018 17:56

I think it was a whipped vote for Labour. I went to see my Labour MP today and he is gender critical. Definitely go and meet her thatdamnwoman
