We don't have female celebrities speaking up but Taylor Swift does

Taylor Swift announced to her 112million Instagram followers that she's voting Democrat next month.

Some simply refused to believe what she had written to her 112 million Instagram followers Sunday evening — a 400-word condemnation of “systemic racism,” homophobia and Rep. Marsha Blackburn, the GOP Senate candidate in her home state of Tennessee, complete with Swift’s endorsement of two Democrats: Phil Bredesen, the party’s Senate candidate, and Rep. Jim Cooper.

That a 28-year-old celebrity — even one who had previously kept her politics private — would weigh in on a potentially crucial midterm election seems much less strange than the story of how the far-right Internet came to believe Swift was their secret ally — “our girl,” as many put it.

In the UK, we mostly can not get any women celebrities or even politicians to speak up on issues that matter to us but Taylor Swift is doing it.

I was puzzled by the assumption that Taylor was a Republican. It's not new, I've heard people say that for years, but it seemed an odd thing to assume.

you can't really know anyone's views unless they share them!

I wouldn’t send her an adult human female tshirt just yet, she talked about LGBTQ rights and discrimination because of gender before she mentioned racism. I don’t think she’s in any danger of being a nasty old radfem.

Oh the delicious "but she was ours!" schadenfreud-y goodness!

Womaningreen · 09/10/2018 14:33

she had to word it so it would get through to her fan base

I have a feeling she might well get to Adult Human Female next, but I'm not sure where that stuff is heading in the US? I wonder if they will also be looking at the UK on some level to see next steps?

I have a vague recollection of a judge in LA rubbishing "woman feelz" but I can't recall what it was about...if something jogs my memory, I will find and post.

Donald Trump, the man who does not have very small hands, said he likes Taylor Swift about 25% less now. Well I wouldn't know Taylor Swift if she fell out of a tree and landed on me, but I like her 100% more.

She grew up wealthy and started in country music. I’m not surprised the right thought she was part of the fold.

I think my favorite part of this whole story may be the fact that these idiots thought that Swift let 4chan name her cat, and that that was a cornerstone of their belief that she was totes on their side.

I admire Taylor Swift for setting out her politics and even writing a short essay as to why she intends to vote the way she's announced.

We can't get politically active UK celebrities to take a stand on some important matters and even career politicians won't do it. I now know more about Sandi Toksvig's pay deal vis-a-vis the one Stephen Fry had than I do about her perspective on male lesbians or the erosion of free speech, drive towards totalitarianism, or the GRA consultation.
