Wellcome Collection, the free museum from Wellcome, in London.

Is running a 4 day programme of events "Daylighting".

They talk about "Womxn" throughout. WTF I'm loosing the plot now.

colouring

Typo there, shurely they mean gaslighting

KatVonGulag · 09/10/2018 07:25

Noticed LM spelling women with an x too

Think the x stands for dick

Dommina · 09/10/2018 07:28

That looks really interesting, thanks. I'll book a ticket. Smile

womxn
A spelling of "women" that is a more inclusive, progressive term that not only sheds light on the prejudice, discrimination, and institutional barriers womxn have faced, but to also show that womxn are not the extension of men (as hinted by the classic Bible story of Adam and Eve) but their own free and separate entities. More intersectional than womyn because it includes trans-women and women of color

Ooops! They seem to have inadvertently cut and pasted a nonsense definition from some American source, which is actually racist

"Look at us- all progressive, lumping actula black women in with people who are actually men"

deepwatersolo · 09/10/2018 07:31

The subtext of the whole affair is, of course, the ‚impossibility‘ to define ‚woman‘, because it is all so mean metaphysical only art can highlight aspects of this undefinable condition. Someone needs to project Posie‘s poster onto that museum wall.

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 09/10/2018 07:34

Yes. Its all so very difficult isn't it?

I would like to think they would explore gender norms, gender stereotypes, without discounting actual biology. This is the Wellcome trust

deepwatersolo · 09/10/2018 07:34

Scratch out mean. I didn‘t mean to write it. Though the ‚ transwomen and women of color‘ bit is kind of mean, actually. Like nobody saw women of color as women or womyn before... Hmm

AngryAttackKittens · 09/10/2018 07:45

How does womyn not include women of color? Answer - it does, but gender cultists love othering black women and attempting to appropriate their experiences.

Also, a marketing suggestion - if you're trying to coin a new term and want it to stick and move into common usage it helps if people can figure out how to pronounce it.

SquirmOfEels · 09/10/2018 07:46

Using different spellings in place of woman/women has been a feature of feminism since 1970s at least (womyn/wimmin etc)

Presumably the change to 'x' is an echo of the Mx prefix, which is more about removing the need to specify sex/gender/marital status/educational level every time you give a name.

Wellcome Collection often runs art exhibitions based on science (I've been to good ones on faeces, on forensics and on sex) and they are meant to be thought-provoking. It's a fascination art and curios gallery to visit.

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 09/10/2018 07:54

Squirm

I've no argument with that. It's a fascinating place

Not a good look to actually imply that black women are women only to the extent that biologically male women are, though...

jellyfrizz · 09/10/2018 08:04

How about womxxn and womxyn?

Your womxxn for when you want to refer to actual female stuff and womxyn when it’s about the tits and make up.
