Quick question about giving out leaflets

Is it just legal to stand on the street and give them out eg outside shopping mall, train station etc. Street, not inside mall, station concourse and so on.

Check on your council's website, each area is different. There may be an area where a permit is required but outside that area you can leaflet away.

Yes it is, you dont need permission or a street licence although there may be local restrictions on where you can stand.

It's legal to give out political and religious leaflets anywhere AFAIK.

Councils may restrict or even ban leaflets in some area but IIRC they're not allowed to restrict political or religious leaflets. They are, however, allowed to demand you get a licence e.g. because of concerns about littering. They may charge for licences for commercial advertising on flyers but IIRC they're not allowed to charge for licences for people giving out political / religious flyers.

Where I live, for example, the large city has a restriction on flyering in its central shopping, clubbing and tourist district, but not anywhere outside of that. None of the smaller towns in the region have any kind of restrictions.

Check out your local council's website.

Sorry, I should have said - the restriction for flyering in the central district basically means you need a licence to hand out leaflets, but for political leaflets they have to give it to you for free.

Inside malls etc, it's not illegal. But it is private property so the owners have the right to ask you to leave.

Brilliant thank you!
