Andrew Gilligan reports:
(extracts)
"A Welsh GP who gave sex-change hormones to children as young as 12 has been criminally convicted for operating gender treatment services without a licence.

Helen Webberley will be sentenced next month after being found guilty on Friday at Merthyr Tydfil magistrates’ court of illegally providing healthcare services. She faces an unlimited fine.

The case was brought by the regulator, the Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), which refused to give a licence last year to Webberley’s company, Online GP Services, and then prosecuted the firm and her personally after she continued to operate.

Convicting her under the Care Standards Act 2000, District Judge Neil Thomas ruled that she committed the offence through “consent, connivance or neglect”. (continues)

"Webberley is also under investigation by the General Medical Council.

Kate Chamberlain, HIW’s chief executive, said Webberley’s operation posed a “risk to patient safety”.

cf BBC report earlier this week:

'Transgender specialist Dr Helen Webberley ran online clinic'

"A GP who hit the headlines for giving advice to transgender children faces a fine after running an online clinic without permission.

Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates' Court heard that Dr Helen Webberley was told not to run her web-based advice surgery by watchdog Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW).

Dr Webberley, of Abergavenny, insisted she was innocent.

But a judge ruled the defendant and her company broke the Care Standards Act.

Last year, Dr Webberley has received widespread media attention after providing medical care to transgender young people via her firm Online GP Services Ltd." (continues)

Yeah, how is a GP running a clinic in any way news, BBC? Thousands of GPs do that every week.

Oh you mean this particular one is illegal? There's the story BBC. Right in front of your nose. And you might want to mention the GMC investigations while you are at it.

This from the outfit (BBC) who considered that the conviction of David Challenor for 22 years for torturing and raping a 10 year old was not newsworthy enough for BBC Coventry news.

Thank God for The Times.

Popchyk Was the crime not covered there at all by BBC?

I was away when he was convicted and struggled to keep up with things.

I'm gobsmacked given how involved he was with scouts, gymnastics, Coventry Pride and local Green Party!

I was talking to a friend who lives in the area and had been surprised she wasn't aware but makes more sense now.

Not until a week after the conviction. And then they used the Green Party/Aimee Challenor angle.

Not newsworthy in itself, apparently.

That's terrible.

Primarily for the young girl but also as it is often the case that offences such as his may have been repeated with other victims.
