CERN statement re. Strumia

I guess I'm not that surprised as CERN are woke as fuck. But this annoyed me:

www.particlesforjustice.org/

So they condemn Strumia, but the wording pissed me off:

"We write here first to state, in the strongest possible terms, that the humanity of any person, regardless of ascribed identities such as race, ethnicity, gender identity, religion, disability, gender presentation, or sexual identity is not up for debate."

Of course I agree. But they haven't listed sex. And I find their wording odd, as Strumia didn't debate anyone's humanity.

The rest of their statement is great.

Could they not have just said "we condemn discrimination and stereotyping on the basis of sex, just as we do on the basis of race, religion..." etc etc.

I know, I'm whinging about something relatively minor. But someone must get where I'm coming from, right? You'd never guess what actually happened from their opening paragraph, or that it was stereotyping women and denying their contribution to Physics.

Yes, overall it's good but I think efforts were made to not refer to discrimination by sex.

The wording demonstrates ignorance. Probably what they meant by 'sexual identity' was simply 'sex', but so many people do not understand what the words sex, gender and identity mean. They get added for padding, or because it sounds good - buzzword bingo. It's like when people say "I'm not xxxx in any way, shape or form." What does 'in any way, shape or form' add to the sentence? It could just have been "I'm not xxxx." Or "I'm not xxxx in any way." But people have heard 'in any way, shape or form' and just tag it on because they think it means something. It's what people say. That is what I think has turned 'sex' into "sexual identity " in the Cern statement.

People aren't clear about what words mean. Just as we have pedants on MN who chose to humiliate a poster by pointing out their mistakes, rather than address their questions, there are people in RL who will grab onto these mistakes and claim that they are truths, and interpret the mistakes in ways that were probably never considered by the writers.

I expect you're right. It reminded me of the numerous instances of the equality act having sex changed to gender.

It's only in the last 50y or so that gender has come to mean societally-imposed stereotypes. Originally it was simply a grammatical term describing the way nouns in some languages are grouped, and thus affect other parts of the language. Then it became a euphemism for the word 'sex'. Hence the confusion, and the belief by many that the two words are interchangeable. I'm sure that most people have no idea that sex and gender do not mean the same thing.

Language is so important in this debate.

Just stop it

All it goes on about is gender and gender presentation and ascribed identities and waffle :(

This was kicked off by sexist misogynist attitudes and language by Sturmia, not because of the women's gender identity or ascribed identity FFS.

Why can they not just say plain and simple, that they don't allow or condone sex discrimination against women?

There isn't even a contact so we can complain.
