Black Herstory Month - celebrating WOC

Imkaan, a London based organisation working with survivors of VAWG from BME communities, has taken it upon itself to celebrate Black Herstory Month by honouring a woman of colour each day. Sounds lovely, right?

It's day 5 and they have thus far celebrated:

Claudia Jones - journalist and activist
Naomi Hersi - murdered in March
Ronelle King - feminist/human rights activist
Marielle Franco - feminist/civil rights activist
Munroe Bergdorf - less said the better.

That's right, we're five days in and they've managed to celebrate 3 women and 2 cuckoos in the nest. Is it really so hard to find inspirational women of colour?

Why is a DV charity championing people who aren't women in their celebration of herstory? Surely those in the VAWG sector should really understand the impact of suggesting that those not born female can become women!

Female erasure. What is going on inside these charities? So many many inspirational women they could choose.

Angry Ffs That is ridiculous. I can think of many black women I'd celebrate. Naomi Hersi is basically being celebrated for being murdered which is quite insensitive, especially given there are plenty of murdered black females they could use instead (except they wouldn't because that's just run of the mill, trans is special) Gosh this has made me cross.

SIGH.

And why isn't Linda Bellos first on the list?

I guess they wouldn't dare if they did want to.

Maybe they need a lesson in black history. This is just embarrassing but you see it quite often in tokenism history. I recently picked up a children's book about important women in history and there was an entire page dedicated to zoella. That's right, apparently the make up girl from YouTube is a feminist icon.

As well as being sexist, Monroe has made several racist and homophobic comments.

Sad

And yet celebrating and centring trans women doesn’t result in “cis” women being erased. Or so they tell us. Looks like it’s another one of those situations that NEVER happens, but actually does
