Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A callout to Irish Feminists

From Posie

RTE's Prime Time current affairs programme is looking at the proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act and would like to speak to Irish women who broadly agree with me (Posie). It would be great if more women were heard in Ireland as there so far it is assumed there is no opposition.

I have an email address, so you will need to PM me

It's a shame we can't contact maryzed... :(

Nettymummy · 02/10/2018 18:58

Is that an Irish Act? It hasn't been published in Irish media, or I've not come across it. Do you have any link to the proposed changes? Or is it in reference to UK law?

LiverpoolReSisters · 02/10/2018 18:59

Can someone tweet this to Ireland ReSisters? Out at the moment.

BeyondAdultHumanFemale · 02/10/2018 19:03

Sorry I've assumed you mean Rep of Ireland (which has its own equivalent laws) but did you mean NI (as you mention the GRA)?

BeyondAdultHumanFemale · 02/10/2018 19:04

But then RTÈ is ROI so now I'm not sure..!

shoofly · 02/10/2018 19:05

RTE wouldn't be making a programme based on the law in Northern Ireland, it would be Ireland...

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 02/10/2018 19:06

I've not seen any specific reference to this in the Irish media recently. Are you referring to ROI?

heresyandwitchcraft · 02/10/2018 19:14

There was a thread about Irish feminists:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3367602-Any-Irish-feeling-a-bit-isolated

Will cross-post this over there.

Nettymummy · 02/10/2018 19:28

Without reading the whole other thread, what are the proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act in relation to Ireland?
Please can you link to any quick info.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 02/10/2018 19:30

I think I read there's a two year review of the implementation legislation here in RoI upcoming, so perhaps it's in reference to that?

NettleTea · 02/10/2018 19:31

I am not sure I can answer the questions as Im simply the messenger.

As far as I understand self ID was kind of swept through a little under the radar and not many people were aware of it, or it's implications. It would appear that the official line is 'well Ireland has self ID and nobody has a problem with it, its all working well'

And RTE are wondering if that is actually true

The only thing I am aware of is that prisons are not the same as here in the UK, because you are held according to sex not gender, however you identify.

NI I am absolutely ignorant of how things are there.

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 02/10/2018 19:31

Yes, Ireland is looking at updating its Act and reducing the age to 16 for self id. Assume this is what the request is about.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 02/10/2018 19:34

Sorry, according to here m.welfare.ie/en/pressoffice/Pages/pr180718.aspx the review has already been completed. Maybe it's to do with the recommendations?

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 02/10/2018 19:35

Cross posted

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 02/10/2018 19:35

According to another article 99 people applied last year in Ireland for a GRC. We aren't talking huge demand.

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 02/10/2018 19:36

I assume it's about the legislation having to be voted on by the Dail (parliament) and consultations around what the draft legislation should include.

MarDhea · 02/10/2018 19:38

The Gender Recognition Act 2015 is the law in Ireland that effectively introduced a few rm of self-ID. It's Irish law, not NI or UK.

There are proposals to extend self-ID to under 16s, with parental permission. The full report is here: www.welfare.ie/en/downloads/GRA%20Review%20Report.pdf

It's a shit show. Most people in Ireland aren't even aware that self ID exists in law as it was brought in with zero fanfare, and they certainly don't know about the 80% desistance rate in gender dysphoric children. If Prime Time actually allow a proper discussion, it'll be very useful for proper debate.

placemats · 02/10/2018 19:39

It's Ireland. Not the Republic of Ireland, the 26 counties, the south, just Ireland.

It's Northern Ireland. Not Ulster, the six counties or the north.

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

RTE operates from Ireland though it does have offices in Belfast, which is in Northern Ireland.

Hope that helps.

placemats · 02/10/2018 19:48

To add, if you live in Northern Ireland you have duel citizenship.

Irish usually means Ireland.

Northern Irish can mean British, or those who wish Irish/British, or Irish.

Northern Ireland has a devolved government, currently in suspension.

In Ireland, it took decades for the 8th amendment to be overturned. The GRC was passed without so much as a public consultation. And there are sex based exceptions:

Prisons
Convents
Priesthood
Inheritance

A priest did 'come out' as transgender but then left the priesthood.

This is penks news take on LGBT rights in Ireland.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 02/10/2018 20:37

Isn't there a lot of work going on right now to avoid a dueling citizenship, placemats? Wink (sorry, couldn't resist Smile)

silentcrow · 02/10/2018 21:06

At the end of the last Standing For Women meeting in Manchester there was a question about self id in Ireland, and the answers from an Irish audience member, Anne Ruzylo and Jean Hatchet are well worth listening to for the historical context of the GRA in that country.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 02/10/2018 22:14

Really placemats? Really?

NettleTea · 02/10/2018 23:46

Just to clarify. Im not Posie, just passing on a message from Posie
