How long does it take to complete the GRA consultation?

I hear it's quite long 😄 - so, are we talking a cup of tea and a biscuit, or an afternoon off work with a pizza delivery?

Has anyone used any of the available guides to help a little?

This is the WPUK guide - if you scroll down, you'll see the link to the consultation, the survey, and shortcut links to the questions where you can see WPUK's recommendations:

Thank you everyone 🙂☕️🍰.

It took me about an hour and a half. Mainly my own words but for a couple of questions towards the end I cut and pasted from FPFW. I found it tough going.

Is it actually legal for the government to produce such a badly worded, inaccessible, biased and barely publicised 'consultation'?

GatheringHerBrows · 02/10/2018 20:24

Charley50, I'm planning to complain.

This is a link to the gov.uk consultation principles:

<a class="break-all" href="http://go.mumsnet.com/?xs=1&id=470X1554755&url=assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/691383/Consultation_Principles__1_.pdf" target="blank">https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachmentdata/file/691383/Consultationn<a class="break-all" href="http://go.mumsnet.com/?xs=1&id=470X1554755&url=assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/691383/Consultation_Principles__1.pdf" target="_blank">Principles111<a class="break-all" href="http://go.mumsnet.com/?xs=1&id=470X1554755&url=assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/691383/Consultation_Principles__1.pdf" target="_blank">.pdf

I believe that the consultation breaks several of these.

Thanks @GatheringHerBrows - I will too.

Charley50 · 02/10/2018 20:31

I'm quite new to this, but has there been a petition at all, about anything to do with the GRA, where with a certain number of signatories it has to be debated in Parliament?
I haven't seen anything and am quite surprised.

WeeMadArthur · 02/10/2018 20:53

Thanks arranfan

PierreBezukov · 02/10/2018 20:57

There was a petition charley asking the government to consult women. It didn't get enough signatures for a parliamentary debate (pls correct me people if I'm wrong).

Charley50 · 03/10/2018 07:57

I wonder if it would get more names now? And really there should be another consultation asking women and girls about how they feel about the various space-sharing scenarios.

FekkoTheLawyer · 03/10/2018 07:59

It took 2 of my sister's about half an hour. I nagged them and they did it though!

Charley50 · 03/10/2018 07:59

As there, not and there.

Icantreachthepretzels · 03/10/2018 16:54

Just submitted mine. Is there any chance that our voices will be listened to?
I'm sort of of the belief that the best chance of stopping this is that brexit happens first and is such an unmanageable clusterfuck that parliament has no time for something as intangible as the GRA. Too busy organising food deliveries and deploying the army onto the streets.
Plus brexit essentially removes our human rights (they were our rights as EU citizens - and of all the EU laws they passed into the repeal bill so they would remain in place on brexit day - our personal rights were not one of them). Human rights are going to be a free for all in Brexit Britain - they're not going to give rights to one tiny little group when they have just achieved their tory heart's desire and removed everybody's rights.

arranfan · 03/10/2018 17:04

I'm sort of of the belief that the best chance of stopping this is that brexit happens first and is such an unmanageable clusterfuck that parliament has no time for something as intangible as the GRA.

The difficulty is that so many people have adopted Self-ID policies and similar in anticipation of the changes. Those will become fossilised and very soon, people will say that the law needs to be updated to reflect current practice so the changes would happen anyway unless actively stopped.

In case you haven't filled it out yet. Here's another gem... However the replies are gold.

How long does it take to complete the GRA consultation?
Wardrobehamster · 03/10/2018 20:00

I’ve taken my first look at this and am a bit frightened as it looks like I need to put down my name and contact details. Did you all use your real ones?

I find it really difficult to articulate my thoughts in writing. Where could I find the Guide lines a PP suggested?

Also this consultation doesn’t doubt that transgender people exist but I just don’t get this. Gender is something we make? So am I not allowed to say in the consultation that I don’t believe so many people can be trans?

arranfan · 03/10/2018 20:06

Your details are not public - you can submit via the WPUK or FPFW websites.

WPUK guidance: womansplaceuk.org/wpuk-guidance-on-gra-consultation/#question-1

FPFW guidance - lengthy: fairplayforwomen.com/full_guide/#q3

or the quick jump to the questions that matter most (in colour):

fairplayforwomen.com/full_guide/

Upthread from here, I did a barebones based on FPFW that I'll repeat below.

Wardrobehamster · 03/10/2018 20:14

Thank you arran. I didn’t realise I could complete it via a third party, I just found it on the gov website.

I saw your barebones answers and I think I’ll follow those.

arranfan · 03/10/2018 20:28

Barebones for FPFW:

Go to Question 3. Answer Yes.

Go to Question 9. Answer No.

Go to Question 12. Answer Yes.

Go to Question 13A. Answer Yes.

Go to Question 14. Answer Yes.

Go to Question 15. Answer Yes.

Go to Question 19. Answer Yes.

FPFW would like you to do this for 22 and comment but you do not have to do anything but list some issues if you want or not comment beyond 'Yes'.

Go to Question 22. Answer Yes.

Possibly comment for 22.
The consultation has not covered the far-reaching consequences for other groups of people would would be affected by this.At present, there doesn't seem to be any consideration for the protected characteristics such as:
sexual orientation;
religious faiths that do not permit mixing with males or require females to be covered in the presence of males;
maintaining the safeguarding of children and vulnerable groups.

I do not want changes to the Gender Recognition Act until I am confident the Government fully understands the implications in wider society to ensure other groups do not have their protections removed.

Consultation ends there. Submit.

We really don't have to put in any answers beyond Yes/No tho' it's helpful to have something for Q22.

arranfan · 03/10/2018 20:30

There are more detailed answers and guides on both sites - and some basic text. Sometimes, all you need to do is refer to news stories.

But, only if you wish. :)

Thank you :)
