Have you seen the trailers for the new Deana starring Anna Friel - which tells the story of a 11 year old boy going public with his female identity?

Just that really - I'm wondering how it will play out.

wonder if ofcom are going to be needing extra staff. Am always looking for jobs

adulthumanfemail · 01/10/2018 13:28

We need to watch so we know what's being said

I don’t suppose it’s any coincidence that the ITV presenters/assets on This Morning kept the company line when talking to PP and IW this week. ITV won’t want the entire premise of Butterfly to be undermined by disrespectful women. It’s written by a BAFTA winning writer, it will have cost a fortune and l imagine they think it will be a shoo-in come award season. Look out for ITV appearances from the relevant talking heads to underline the virtue, the bravery and sheer brilliance of the production.
(Hello feminist board, first time on here. Lurking since the Hampstead Ponds Man Friday action...been angry since showering next to a bloke washing his bits in my local mixed changing rooms at the swimming baths. He had trunks on but it was at that very second the penny dropped. )

I am wondering whether it is worth complaining to ITV that they have a propaganda piece supporting a mother breaking the law to do irreversible damage to her child in order to support her personal conviction that it is possible a child can be 'born in the wrong body'.

I remember years ago a family of Jehovah's Witnesses were in the press because they were refusing to consent to a life saving blood transfusion for their daughter on religious grounds.
Will Butterfly explore the conflict between extreme personal beliefs of parents and the rights of children to enter adulthood without being permanently disfigured or mutilated according to their parent's belief.

LittlePearl · 01/10/2018 14:43

Ruby that sounds grim. But welcome - there seem to be a lot of people de-lurking and it's very encouraging.

RubyViolet · 01/10/2018 15:03

Thanks Little Pearl !!
The more l think about what happened to Posie on This Morning the more l am beginning to think ITV have used her for pre-publicity
to set up their position for Butterfly.
Hopefully the narrative itself will more objective, we shall see.

Jarveau · 01/10/2018 15:03

Can't wait. There'll be uplifting music and triumphant scenes at the end when the child wins a local beauty pageant or a modelling competition. Moving! Empowering! I'm not looking forward to the scenes when the child comes round from "self authentication" surgery in Thailand at the age of 16.

AbsintheFriends · 01/10/2018 15:06

I considered complaining New, but honestly I don't think it would go anywhere. I think the best we can hope for is that the programme generates a wider conversation around the whole 'wrong body' ideology, and how sinister and damaging it is. It would be great if there were pieces in the media giving insight into the long term effects, and questioning the ethics of rigid affirmation. I won't hold my breath though.

RubyViolet that's a depressingly excellent point about BAFTA. I fear you're absolutely spot on. (And welcome to FWR Grin)

MorrisZapp · 01/10/2018 15:08

I know exactly what to expect. Funny, self deprecating adorable kid gets bullied by mean kids with mean mums. Singing. Costumes. Tears. Pink. Happy ending.

Same in drama about transboys, except they are signalled with bowties and skateboards.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 01/10/2018 15:32

I have been wanting to post about this all day but I am more of a lurker on these boards. The full trailer is here if anyone wants to watch.

WatchThePotatoesBoil · 01/10/2018 15:37

There's more than one piece of mermaids placement onscreen in this drama - I saw the screenshots on Twitter. Plus of course mermaids have been tweeting about their contributions to it.

SirVixofVixHall · 01/10/2018 15:38

I have an irrational dislike of Anna Friel anyway, and the interviews I’ve seen with her talking about this were predictably crap. I think puberty blockers “giving space to think “ featured.
Would have been far braver of ITV to show a drama with a mother trying to help her ROGD daughter to come to terms with her own sex.

AbsintheFriends · 01/10/2018 15:54

That trailer... (thanks for de-lurking to post zero!)

"I'd rather have a daughter than a dead son."

I wasn't going to watch it, but we could have an FWR drinking game of cliche bingo? We'd all be trollied by the first advert break.

RubyViolet · 01/10/2018 15:57

The direct email for the ITV PR for the production is there if you scroll down past the trailer in Zero’S link. Just made a note of that.
Disappointed in Nicola Schindler the founder of Red Productions, l had always her admired Red’s output of strong woman centred productions like Happy Valley.

BlooperReel · 01/10/2018 15:58

Mermaids are heavily involved in it, it will be utter bullshit, glossed over with a happy ending.

Redshoeblueshoe · 01/10/2018 16:01
