The Silent Majority

The phrase has been used at various times and I think was popularized by Nixon when he used it to describe what he believed were conservative voters who though not making a noise politically would show up at the polls.

MNHQ may or may not have understood that the feminist boards were extremely popular with Mumsnet users. I think I read somewhere that they were clearly aware that FWR was driving a huge amount of traffic. By just simply asking why people come and why they remain at MN it seems pretty clear that there is an enormous group of Lurkers or in political parlance The Silent Majority. I clearly do post here but I often feel my contributions are extremely modest next to some of the incredible thinkers and writers that express themselves so fantastically well in feminist chat especially. The sharp wit and humour around these parts also set a high standard.

So I am not surprised that many women in particular are reading and keeping up to date and very likely spreading the word politically among their family and friends, especially as we are raising the next generation. I think the amount of women who attend the regular meetings such as those held at Leeds and Manchester this weekend are a very, very tiny tip of the iceberg of the amount of women who would love to attend similar. I have not been able to attend any of the meetings but I am contributing financially through crowdfunding which is a first for me.

So my question is, do you believe the biggest group on MN is The Silent Majority who although lurking rather than posting are supporters of feminism and the aims of various groups many of whom such as ManFriday were gestated and birthed on these boards? How can the power of the Lurkers aka The Silent Majority be mobilised?

I have been lurking and joined up again (Jeffrey and Emma Healy and company scared me off) to say I have been reading your posts and taking action off MN.

Keep posting, we are reading, I am with you, WE CAN DO THIS!

Pick a Friday, all strike.

Like this you mean?

TerfedOff · 30/09/2018 20:29

24th October this year is a Wednesday..... Woman Wednesday ?

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 30/09/2018 20:30

I think that Thread put to rest the myth that the feminist board is for a select few

TerfedOff · 30/09/2018 20:31

It's so funny I just get the picture of lots of empty forums whilst everybody crowds over here to chat

EngineeringWoman · 30/09/2018 20:34

Yes a women's strike.

scepticalwoman · 30/09/2018 20:38

We can talk - to everyone.
My hairdresser is now fully onside. Dinner with friends last week - really positive discussions - the girl guides debacle started that discussion. 3 different headteachers all now aware of the transgender trend guidelines and the breaching of safeguarding by trans lobby groups (Posie's poster started that conversation off). Lovely neighbours now aware and on side. Even a taxi driver when we were stuck in traffic last week.
They had all heard of Karen White and were all appalled. Keep talking.

The only way a silent majority can have power is in the voting booth. It’s why the Torres win and the country voted Brexit.

Most of the silent majority just want to go about their lives. They don’t have the time, confidence or support to go up against aggressive and confrontational ‘right on’ types.

So if a general election is looming we should ascertain what our local candidates believe and vote accordingly. Put sex before party allegiance. It is what I intend to do.

EngineeringWoman · 30/09/2018 20:50

Women's strike on 29th March 2019?

IdaBWells · 30/09/2018 20:54

I am helping my 18 yr old study for a government and politics exam! Get back ASAP.

I have been posting in FB about the GRC consultation and have increasingly had friends contact me to say "I am listening. Keep posting"' 3 people have changed their stance on self ID as a direct result of my FB posts. None of them have posted a thing. The challenge is to get that silent majority filling in the consultation.

IdaBWells · 30/09/2018 20:59

Yes maybe the immediate focus should be on getting people to complete the consultation, no longer just talking about it.

OP posts:
IdaBWells · 30/09/2018 21:03

I have directly asked two people to complete it maybe I need to think of more people to ask, I haven’t even discussed this with my brother for example. Maybe we could all try and get 5 or more people to complete it?

I think everyone underestimates the determination of adult human females, especially when children are under threat. Women who have never had to learn the value of sex segregated spaces can and do understand safeguarding procedures, and know what happens to children when safeguarding is undermined. We won't accept the sacrifice of a child as collateral damage.

Each lurker has their own network of acquaintances, most of whom won't have a clue what is going on. I told the women in my book group what I had found out, and a month later when we met again they had spread the information to their relatives, to people at work, to yoga and tai chi groups, to parents outside the school gates, to parents at Sunday school, and to a group of school governors. The ripples continue to spread in all directions. Once people are made aware of what is going on they are appalled, and they go on to inform their own network of friends and acquaintances.

Ocado are currently loosing loyal customers and a staggering amount of money (all those diamond encrusted salmon orders), because they chose to side with anti women activists. They assumed it was safe to treat women with open contempt, and now a significant section of their customer base have made the decision to spend their money elsewhere. Other firms and organisations will be taking note. We have massive buying power. We can use it to support the firms who advertise with mumsnet, and to demonstrate our displeasure towards those who happily support law changes that would undermine our safety and the safety of our children.

Political parties have felt safe throwing women under the bus. They thought only a few women would find out what was going on in time to react, and that the media would ignore or blatantly misrepresent any protests. They didn't realise how many women were lurking on mumsnet, or how many of us were spreading the information through our own network of friends and acquaintances. Each time one of us makes an appointment to speak to our MP we remind them that reasonable women have genuine cause for concern, we expect their support and will remember their response come the next election. We are half the electorate, and we will not forgive them, we will hold them personally responsible for each and every damaged child.

TerfedOff · 30/09/2018 21:05

I think it was suggested that people may be organised drinks evenings where you all filled it in together and stuff like that

EngineeringWoman · 30/09/2018 21:13

"Women are allowed to be angry" Posie Parker

Women are angry, how dare you give away our rights!

IdaBWells · 30/09/2018 21:13

I think something simple and concrete, so it’s not intimidating. Unfortunately the consultation document is so long and unwieldy but at the very least people can complete it saying yes and no at a minimum.

Stealth excellent post. Studies have shown that the further removed a child is from their biological mother the more likely they are to be abused. That durn biology again!

OP posts:
IdaBWells · 30/09/2018 21:17

And women are so patronized, despite I believe women gaining more educational qualifications than men. That squeaky Dr. up against Posie was very patronizing toward her, Mumsnet women and women in general.

Carrrotsandcauliflower · 30/09/2018 21:31

I think spread the word as far as you can about the consultation. Plop it anywhere you can on social media- the more people do it the less it will be ignored- I’ve done sooo many face book shares and posts and had about two likes- but in real life when you talk to people they are on side- this needs to travel on social media- not just twitter. Talking is best but there will be people you can’t chat to. I’ve written to my MP and one of my local councillors but I haven’t had any response yet. I wrote to a local labour councillor who said she would be asking questions at their next meeting so that was heartening. Neighbours and friends are chatting about this and have said they will fill in the consultation. Stick stickers, spread messages have conversations.

minsmum · 30/09/2018 21:41

I have filled out the sports consultation and told a friend who is one of the top coaches in the country in a particular field about it. Tomorrow I will speak to Muslim friends about the GRA consultation and ask them to consider filling it out and asking them to contact their friends, family and mosque about it. A bit scary as it will be the first time I have raised this at work

IdaBWells · 30/09/2018 21:57

As much as it is fantastic to spread the word, really encouraging people close to you to complete it would be better that never being sure if anyone followed through after reading a leaflet. “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”.

PerkingFaintly · 30/09/2018 22:37

So two brand new posters appear and start a thread advocating a general strike? For no apparent reason other than "show our power"?

Yeah.

That doesn't AT ALL sound like the Russian trolls organising both sides of demos against racial violence.

Or like disruptivists like Steve Bannon (Trump-puppeteer and alleged assaulter of women himself), whose reaction to #MeToo was basically: "Look at all that lovely anger; how can I exploit it?"

Not even a little bit.Hmm
