Drag queens who are women

Virgin Airlines have dropped a drag queen from their new advertising campaign.

She's a woman.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/09/29/virgin-drops-drag-queen-woman/

I thought drag was where people dressed as a parody of the opposite sex. Confused

Has anyone noticed that only one of the sexes can be sacked for being 'the wrong sex'?

Whereas the other sex belongs to the "I'll get you arrested if you even so much as reference my sex" sex?

Its like sex matters when it can be used as a weapon against one sex, and is a mighty forcefield of denial when applied to the other sex?

Insofar as drag is concerned, clearly only blokes are allowed to perform a grotesque mockery of women. Obvs.

Iused2BanOptimist · 30/09/2018 17:22

Is that legal? Hope they get sued.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 30/09/2018 17:24

I was just Hmm at the article.

Well she could be a transman who is a drag queen?

starzig · 30/09/2018 17:41

Drag queen is about the exaggerated image, not really an opposite sex thing. They are usually but not exclusively male.

CrazyToast · 30/09/2018 19:06

Female drag queens (sometimes called bioqueens) are a thing- but they get a lot of stick from the drag community for 'appropriating' drag from gay men. Bit rich considering that drag is appropriating femininity which stereotypically 'belongs' to women. Don't get me wrong I love drag, but that is what it is. A female can do drag- its just enacting hyperfemininity and anyone can do that. Wouldn't surprise me if they got complaints cos she is female though.

I think when it comes to adverts (or modelling or acting etc) it is not illegal to discriminate on the basis of sex is it? Its also one of the few areas where selecting someone according to how they look is fine.

However does seem a bit daft that the actual woman couldn't be used in the advert, given that they had already decided that she had the look they were after.

Fucked if I know what Virgin are trying to do anyway... So back in the 2009, Virgin made an advert along the lines of "look how gorgeous and sexy our female air hostesses are, fly with us!" (really???) and now to show how "progressive" they are they want to remake it, but with males performing an over the top stereotype of sexy stewardesses Hmm

Reminds me of a piece of utter bullshit I saw on Linkedin recently (think it was Virgin again) along the lines of "You'll be surprised at what opportunities are available within our organisation to women!"
Was supposed to be all empowering, but the career they highlighted as being "open to women" was.... air stewardess! Now there's nothing wrong with that career at all, but its not exactly stereotype busting is it?

I get emails about cut price London theatre tickets. Recently there was one that offered some sort of cabaret involving "drag kings". No idea what they are but tickets were free, so there cannot have been a lot of interest.

There was a very recent issue with British Airways hiring a drag queen who was a a convicted paedophile to be part of their Pride advertising etc.

seafret · 30/09/2018 20:11

As always "what Barracker said!

but also, I wonder if they removed her for other reasons - I mean, I wouldn't have known she was female, but did several times see it think "grr, fucking inclusive-virtue signalling, woman appropriating arseholes" when I saw the ad and add them to my list of boyotts.

Maybe the removal is a GC/ pro-woman indicator? Or not wanting to incur the wrath of MN at least.

I don't like drag at all personally.

seafret · 30/09/2018 20:14

Though Maybe I am thinking of a different advert. I am sure there is one for Virgin though with a drag looking person preening moodily at the camera. .

seafret · 30/09/2018 20:17

I cant read the article fully but seems liek I am wrong hoping it was for GC/ fear of MN wrath. Oh well.

They can have a boycott from me

NothingOnTellyAgain · 30/09/2018 20:19

This just reminded me

I was at airport for summer holidays and gang of virgin people marched through the airport exactly like in the ad
Man at the front (pilot?) and red suited women following him

Was Confused

Of course it was quite striking in the airport so everyone noticed / looked.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 30/09/2018 20:22

"Maybe the removal is a GC/ pro-woman indicator? Or not wanting to incur the wrath of MN at least."

I very much doubt it Grin

More like to avoid a telling off from male drag queens

It's all a bit tricky as some trans people say drag is appropriation of / offensive to trans people

Except sometimes it's fine

...

Confused

Lots of women have disliked drag for an awful long time including pantomime dames, 80s comedians dressing up as women and hoiking bosoms for laughs etc etc

It has always made me feel really uncomfortable even when I was too young to know why
