New 'Impartial' LGBT+ news site from Thompson Reuters Foundation...

Just spotted that Thompson Reuters Foundation have just launched Openly - www.openlynews.com/ - with the marketing blurb line 'We're pleased to announce the launch of Openly - our brand new platform for impartial #LGBT news.'

Needless to say there seem to be lots of trans stories on there...

First one I came to - Transgender women should have the same rights as other women poll - doesn't seem very impartial or accurate at all.

For example - ''But Samantha Nelson, a diversity campaigner, said the debate in Britain was "skewed" because trans women like her already had the right to use female-only spaces under the 2010 Equality Act.''

Saw a lot about Pippa/Philip Bunce being on the list - didn't spot anybody else point out that there was another woman that had been in position 102 that was missing out on a place...

But also worried that the Thompson Reuters Foundation is doing this (as opposed to their actual news teams). They are supposed to be completely impartial - but if they start from the basis that TWAW (the title talks about trans women and other women) and put wrong facts about the equality act enabling transwomen to use female spaces then it's going to have much wider repercussions on the organisation. Not to mention that it will discredit other stories that they carry on the Openly news site where they're reporting on LGB issues that do have serious consequences for people, particularly those living in places where being LGB is illegal or dangerous (or both).

www.lgbtinsurancenetwork.co.uk/sj-nelson/ This is Samantha. Had a successful career working on oil rigs, then got an onshore job and transitioned mid-30s

Samantha has always known they were a girl

I think you will find it's 'lbgT'
🙄

AsAProfessionalFekko · 30/09/2018 16:55

Well that didn't work did it?

Charliethefeminist · 30/09/2018 16:58

Canadian innit

Just googling round and come across this gem - the current partner of Baron Thomson is the excellently named Severine Nackers

AsAProfessionalFekko · 30/09/2018 17:03

Thats a cool name.

What's all this stuff about 'rights'? They polled women in various very different countries (UK, USA, Mexico, Egypt forgotten where else) who will have different laws and women will have differing rights anyway. We all know the truly horrendous murder rates of transwomen in Mexico (the poll was in Mexico City which they say is much more tolerant and they link the intolerance in the rural Mexican areas with the macho culture: what a surprise). Why can't they concoct a meaningful survey instead of this nonsense?

Charliethefeminist · 30/09/2018 17:11

Reuter is seen as a gold standard of accuracy in newsrooms. So either the reputation will diminish, or this news service will be take as gospel.

@AsAProfessionalFekko - I was very specific in my use of LGB and LGBT+

Specifically - I was concerned that the factually incorrect and biased reporting on the T articles could have consequences for those individuals who are LGB. While they might have consequences for T individuals too, as in this instance the errors are coming from the T stories, my main concern is for the others who might experience knock on effects for no fault of their own.

Whilst I am obviously aware of LGBT and LGBT+ I was under the impression that if you just want to talk about - specifically LGB or LG or B or LB or whatever - then you are allowed to. If this is not the case, then please point me in the direction of where I should find the information regarding how and when one should use LGTB, LGTB+, LGT and so on, so I will know for next time.

Absolutely @Charliethefeminist - that's what I worry about.

If Reuters pick up the stories and use the terminology and so on - it gives them all instant credibility. Other people and institutions follow their style guides. It would just become the norm and once that happens it is very difficult to turn the clock back Sad

Most style guides are gender affirming. Look at the Mail calling Karen White she. Actual rapist who assaulted females in a female prison. It's more, I'm concerned about suicide stats or stuff like this garbage survey they just put out. It's like a Stonewall news agency.

Oh brave new world, in which a marginalised, vilified, oppressed group can nevertheless get Reuters doing their actual PR for them
