Poll shows woman support trans-equality

I’m wondering what caveats were exploited here as this certainly doesn’t reflect what I’m seeing and hearing.

Poll shows woman support trans-equality

Well, if someone asked me that question as it was posed above I would probably agree -- if it was stated so baldly with no other background or information. It's a knee-jerk response.
It's only when you start to consider all the ramifications that you might say, hang on a minute -- what about women's sport, prisons, safeguarding and so on?
As an essential human rights question it's easy to say transgender people should have equal rights. People don't ask what rights they currently DON'T have, Nor do they think about how it would affect women's spaces, safety and access to scholarships, awards and advancement or equal pay programmes designed to address the imbalance between the sexes.
In addition I'd like to know a lot more about this poll -- who was it carried out for and if there were any other questions asked. And I'm unhappy to see that the organisation for which I worked for many years reported this without background or context. (although TBF the paper that used the story almost certainly edited it.)

I wonder how the pollsters knew they’d asked women Hmm

SittingAround1 · 30/09/2018 13:38

They don't specify which rights they are referring to. Most would assume human rights, so things like freedom of expression, freedom to have a family, freedom of thought, right to education etc.
In which case I would also agree yes they should have equal rights.

But the current problems aren't about that.

HandlebarTash81 · 30/09/2018 13:39

Thanks @Tartyflette. My feelings too. I’d love to analyse the results of a survey that asks:

  1. Do you think transwomen should have the same rights and access to the same protected spaces? And
  2. Do you think that male-bodied and male-socialised adults should be allowed access to spaces in which women are vulnerable?

I think there would be a huge disparity.

I’m really disappointed by the probably manipulation of this study. Or atleast of its presentation.

Also the TRA movement is trying to restrict freedom of thought with their instance in TWAW and anyone who disagrees is shouted down and told they are phobic.

Beamur · 30/09/2018 13:44

What newspaper is that from?

StealthPolarBear · 30/09/2018 13:45

Did these women they asked have penises?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/09/2018 13:47

I completely agree that trans people should have equal rights - I suspect the vast majority on here would.

I also believe that generally speaking trans people do have equal rights in the UK.

It's a crappy question with results that mean nothing.

I think most people would reply that they are in favour of trans rights, I know I would even though I'm gender critical. People generally are more tolerant than they get credit for and as we've said repeatedly, gender critical feminists are not against trans rights.

But I agree with other posters that if you asked 'Do you believe that men can actually turn into women?' And 'Would you be happy on a mixed sex hospital ward?', you would get a very different response.

I think even our legislators, who should know better, tend to see self ID as an extension of human rights to members of the gay community and haven't thought through the implications for women. It makes me very angry that they haven't, it indicates how little they consider our half of the population. I don't doubt that this is a biased survey that will be misrepresented in the media and used to undermine women's rights.

HandlebarTash81 · 30/09/2018 13:51

What does seem quite clear here is that very few people internationally surveyed had any clue what a transwoman actually was.

Beamur it looks like the Guardian or possibly the Indy picked it up -- but I'm afraid it's a Reuter story. Sad

HandlebarTash81 · 30/09/2018 13:54

Found this on Twitter. It looks like the Guardian but the original study has been picked up in a few different places.

OP posts:
Tartyflette · 30/09/2018 13:55

Tash you're absolutely right -- and fewer still are aware of the wider implications.

redshoeblueshoe · 30/09/2018 13:57

I only got half way through the second link when I saw another stunning and brave person on the Top women in Business list.

FFS

Kewqueue · 30/09/2018 14:00

That's a really leading question though! Does it mean "transwomen should have the same rights to access single sex places according to their birth sex, just as women do"? Or dors it mean something else completely? Confused As it stands it really means nothing at all.

HandlebarTash81 · 30/09/2018 14:09

Gender change involves a change of birth sex on birth certificate so even that would add any real clarity!

OP posts:
Beamur · 30/09/2018 21:17

Ask a woolly question and you'll get an uninformed answer.
I'm all for trans rights and women's rights, but they're not congruent.
