There comes a day when feminism speaks to all women

A concise article here from Aussie Jane Caro about how the gendered shitwork of being an adult human female is what radicalises women into feminism.

This is the heart of it. This is why we're here in collectivity on MN every day.

Yes! Very well reasoned and explained.

And I’m a little concerned to say that she has described me almost to a T.

CAAKE · 30/09/2018 02:04

Hah, yes, me too I'm afraid.

So true The women's room by Marilyn French changed my life at about age 25 ..opened my eyes

True words.

I like that. Very succinct.

Describes my journey. Dh became useless a few years ago after ds was born. A billion times better now I hasten to add (he's just done a big shop while I lie in bed mning after boobing the baby) but motherhood (And mn, and work realisations) radicalised me.

I've a friend who isn't a mother or has a partner but is an engineer and that radicalised her.

Caption from the article:
In my experience it is marriage and, particularly, motherhood that radicalises women.

Because it is then that women get their eyes opened to the trap they were lured into. There is no brainwashing programme for boys that starts at pre-school to convince them they need to get married and have babies as their No.1 goal in life.

Which tells me, most women, if not brainwashed from pre-school, would go "meh" at the idea (some might want babies, but not the marriage deal). After all, patriarchy promises men a built-in wifey so they can concentrate on their careers - so the women have be made available somehow.

She's described me too. When I look back now I can see how naive I was as young woman. I did everything 'right'- worked hard at school, didn't make a fuss, didn't get in to trouble etc. Got qualifications and a good job and believed that I was on a level playing field. Then I had children and realised that I would never be treated the same in the workplace again. What really lifted the scales from my eyes was attempts to get a promotion around the time of the birth of my first child. Applications for promotion could be made once a year. I applied whilst pregnant and was told that, whilst I met the criteria it would not be right to promote me just before I went on maternity leave (this was sold as a favour to me- I would not be able to get the full benefit of making my name in the new role if I was soon on leave). Then I was persuaded to go back to work after 6 months as the team were short staffed, needed my expertise, hints were dropped about how much of a team player this would make me look and how good this would be for my career progression. After a few months I applied for promotion again. This time I was told that I could not meet the criteria as I had not had a full year's target to meet and the fact that I had not been at many evening networking events since returning was brought up (I was still breastfeeding in the evenings as baby was only 6 months). When I finally got the promotion, male colleagues who had been junior to me when I first met the criteria were my bosses.

nicenewdusters · 02/10/2018 12:09

Yep, I just reported a thread like that Captain and it's been deleted. Must be a slow day at the nursery !

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 02/10/2018 12:12

I can imagine, there was a thread the other day titled something like "Diapers saved my marriage" which was similar stuff.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 02/10/2018 12:14

"Reported, what is it with these scatalogical weirdos?"

Lots of weird blokes around who enjoy going where women are whether in person or online and being weird / pervy at them.

It's boring on the net and ranges from annoying to terrifying in real life.

Weirdy pervy men can fuck off IMO.
