That's it really. It must have been incredibly hard to stand up and do what she has done.

I don't know what the outcome will be (I've seen enough unjust results in sex assault trials through my work not to assume anything) but I hope she comes out of this knowing she did the right thing

Or more precisely, whether temperament was an important attribute for a SC judge.

If he is not fit to sit on the Supreme Court, how is he fit to sit on any court. He is already a judge on one of the highest courts in the land. Surely he isnt fit to a judge at all. Should he not be completely disbarred from the profession?

He certainly isn't fit to continue to coach his daughter basketball teams or mentor female law clerks etc.

The whole thing is a political charade. It's taken bi partisanship to a dangerous brink, where 'belief' is all that matters and not suprisingly everyone 'believes' there own side, and pretends, even to themselves, they are not playing a nasty political game.

He has been a very high ranking judge for many years wouldn't this assault have been very relevant to his position even then?

We all know that Dr Ford has come forward now because she wants to stop him being a supreme court justice and presumably she disagrees with his political position.
The democrats used this info at the last moment (they had the information thruouhout the hearings and didn't use it) to upend a political appointment and not because they are so concerned about 'victims'. she is just a convienient 'victim'.

The republicans are not doing what they should be doing which is looking at the facts and establishing if there is any corroborating evidence, rather than undermining her testimony.

Then if there not any corroborating facts at all, and it remains just an accusation he denies, it should be dropped as relevant to his appointment, otherwiese we will be in the position of that tweet above, where just any accusation without any evidence is accepted, in decision making on peoples lives.

This move to belief over facts, and every accusation being believed could lead to dangerous witch hunts. and ultimately is not good for women who are victims of sexual assault.

I say all this as someone who thinks BK is a nasty entitled man whose politics I oppose, and I suspect is lying. But without supporting evidence my belief is and should be irrelevant.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 28/09/2018 14:48

If this was a ' job interview' scenario no account of unsubstantiated accusations would even have been considered by a job panel, as it would be unlawful to do so.

Can you imagine if at any job interview they considered references from anyone who had ever claimed to know you and threw out all applications where anyone accused anyone of anything no matter if there was any evidence for it or not??
Society cannot function on that basis.

We may feel we know where the truth lies but we need to be able to back this with evidence for fair decision making.

Cardiganandcuppa · 28/09/2018 15:51

Yes! Thank you Baby you've articulated my feelings perfectly.

LillyoftheCentralValley · 28/09/2018 16:04

Besides being a political operative for the GOP (highly inappropriate for the court), Kavanaugh wants to end state attorneys general's ability to prosecute persons who have received a federal pardon.

The equivalent of Trump pardoning himself for impeachment high crimes and misdemeanors --- stuff specifically forbidden in the constitution.

And that's why Graham began yelling to distract yesterday when the prosecutor they hired pinned down the date of the party where it happened.

If you're American make sure you're registered to vote. Make sure you have id if required.

Everything is on the line, not just Roe.

LillyoftheCentralValley · 28/09/2018 16:11

And FYI Baby and Cardigan, absolute and completely errant nonsense.

There already is a process where they throw out the "accused of this or this" stuff". It's called a short list.

There is ANOTHER process where they approve or disapprove of candidates and look at those accused of stuff at the last moment.

It's called an FBI background check. It's not onerous. I go through a credit check when I take a new job. The FBI does an more thorough version.

You just might want to google accused of "not paying social security taxes after being nominated" if you think this is something the Democrats just dreamed up willy nilly. This happens quite a bit. The job is important so the mofo needs to be vetted.

The Bar Association, and the blooding JESUITS have said delay the vote.

tobee · 28/09/2018 16:18

He was the definition of snivelling during his statement

hilbobaggins · 28/09/2018 16:23

I absolutely agree Baby

LillyoftheCentralValley · 28/09/2018 16:53

He went to the White House to learn how to act like Trump.

Not unsubstantiated. He did.

Distraction technique to bully Murkowski and Flake. (Collins is a lost cause).

Mitchell pinned down the date, and Graham went into his act.

He should have been vetted on the short list. Ford filed her complaint BEFORE he was named, and the White House had it.

Not the first time Trump appears to fail to do his job while it's exactly the way he wanted to do it.

myrtleWilson · 28/09/2018 19:00

Gah I thought Flake was going to come through then... What happens if there isn't a delay for a week as per his "advisement"? And anyhoo what can the FBI do in a week anyway....?

tobee · 28/09/2018 19:03

That was pretty extraordinary. Got no idea if that's enough time for the FBI

tobee · 28/09/2018 19:03

But more people coming forward?

myrtleWilson · 28/09/2018 19:08

I suppose hoiking it over to the FBI means that Mark Judge may be interviewed? have no idea about remit of any FBI investigation

myrtleWilson · 28/09/2018 20:18

Reports on twitter that MJ will "cooperate" with FBI if it done confidentially - not entirely sure what that means? (in practice rather than not understanding the meaning of confidentially Grin )

Voice0fReason · 28/09/2018 21:56

Ford named Kavanagh in her letter BEFORE he was nominated.
She didn't know that he was going to be nominated, he was on a list of potentials at that point.
If this was a lie, a put up job to delay confirmation, then it would have completely failed if he hadn't been nominated! It's very obvious that this was only about HIM, it was never a political move.
The failure to properly investigate with the FBI is a demonstration that the GOP have no interest in learning the facts and testing the witnesses.
Very disappointed in Flake - he looked like a spineless idiot earlier when he was confronted by protesters.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 28/09/2018 22:53

The comparison with a normal job doesn't work both ways. The point is even a much less important job than this wouldn't employ someone who clearly can't control their temper. This is one of the most significant jobs in the US. The bar for acceptable behaviour should be higher, not lower, whatever the provocation. You didn't see Obama react this way over all the birth certificate rubbish.

But then again, Trump's in the white house so it seems everything is about what team you're on and who you're pals with not whether you're suitable for a job these days....

BeenHereAWhileNow · 28/09/2018 23:58

Getting back to Dr Ford, your testimony has been too painful to watch so I can barely imagine how painful it has been for you. You've proved to us it's nothing to do with how smart, credible, brave, articulate we are as you're all of those things and still they nominated him. It showed us how little women's fears will matter to many men and in particular powerful men so showed us appealing to their decency is not going to work. We need to find other tactics.

We thank you for standing up for every girl who's been sexually assaulted (a number greater than any man realises) and telling men how it feels, some will have listened.
