Self ID - should it be more like getting married?

Bear with me. Thinking about Self-ID in preparation for filling in the consultation.

The Government seems to be looking about Self-ID as though it were the same as a name-change - you make a statutory declaration of your new name, start using it, and off you go.

Maybe it isn't like that.

Maybe it should be more like a marriage contract. A marriage is a public contract between two people, as a result of which they get certain social benefits which used to include tax breaks, inheritance rights, etc.

Changing from a man to a woman, or vice-versa, isn't just a personal decision. It's a social one too, it affects your family, your children, if you have any, your employers. It means you can conceal debts or past crimes.

So maybe Self-ID should be more like getting married, in that you would publish 'banns' and anyone who objected would have the right to be heard.

But the TRAs would never accept any exernal constraint, would they.

Not disagreeing, Babel - I think the language would have to be selected very carefully (and yes, perhaps that rules out any mention of ‘gender’) but it would update the current ‘reassignment’ category whilst not actually giving any rights to identify as the opposite sex.

And the T status would only be an optional extra, much like religion.

Certainly not saying everyone should have to have one. I don’t!

Maybe it should go under religion? It is a belief system...

My last post reads like I was haranguing you betty and that wasn't my intention. It was more in response to the OP. Not haranguing them either mind, just trying tonpoint out he absurdities in codifying gender stereotypes in law ...

The impact of simplifying the application process is equally none for cis people, but is a huge benefit to trans people.

Yep, just like we should totally simplify the driving license application requirements. If people just promise they can drive safely, we can always prosecute them for lying if it turns out not to be true, and changing how we grant licenses will have no effect on the people who already have licenses and those around them at all.
