Complaints about the literacy level required to respond to the GRA

I am getting feedback that, despite guidelines and helpful notes, people are finding it impossible to fill in the GRA consultation.

I am going to raise the matter with my MP and I would urge anyone else to draw attention to this insurmountable barrier to participation.

It's almost as if the government only want to hear from "the right sort" of person and organisation.

The Cabinet Office have guidelines for Government consultations

<a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.gov.uk/government/publications/consultation-principles-guidance&ved=2ahUKEwiBjOSM5uPdAhUKI8AKHWveC5sQFjAAegQIBRAB&usg=AOvVaw2JG8bNDUhQMAhmr0Ty1HWA" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.gov.uk/government/publications/consultation-principles-guidance&ved=2ahUKEwiBjOSM5uPdAhUKI8AKHWveC5sQFjAAegQIBRAB&usg=AOvVaw2JG8bNDUhQMAhmr0Ty1HWA

This consultation seems to breach many of them. I think complaints to them copied to MPs might be useful.

ShcfG · 30/09/2018 23:43

"Human females" !!! Sorry about that! I meant, actual women and girls, as we used to call them ....

Very very pissed off about how bloody obtuse and deceitful and twisting and pushy is this consultation.

Needmoresleep · 30/09/2018 23:45

I assume whoever drafted it was heavily advised by members of the Stonewall diaspora.

WaddIelikeapenguin · 30/09/2018 23:55

Sounds like it's similar to the Scottish one which was entirely prefaced on self ID being a done deal & just needing to tweak the details - i'm still angry!

Potato25 · 30/09/2018 23:57

I looked at the Easy Read version a while ago and it is absolutely appalling! It is just full of terrible pictures and has wrong information such as 'When we are born, our parents say that we are either male or female.'

ShcfG · 01/10/2018 00:05

Waddle - Yes.
I did the Scottish one too. This one is even worse, even more restrictive and disingenuous in the wording (often garbled) asking for Yes/No answers to questions that just do not have a simple Yes/No answer, far from it.

arranfan · 01/10/2018 00:08

Yes! I couldn't believe anyone had signed off on that document it was so full of errors and inappropriate interpretations.

R0wantrees · 01/10/2018 00:09

The address and email for questions about the consultation is on my previous post re the Easy Read version of guidance

It would seem reasonable to send these additionally to the consultation document.

Oldstyle · 01/10/2018 00:11

I've done it, using the WPUK guidelines. Its not brilliant but I'm happy to share my answers to give people a starting point if that would help. DM me.

kooshbin · 01/10/2018 00:32

Thank goodness it's not just me who had difficulty filling in this form. I was really beginning to think it was my age.

But right from the start, it was quite obvious that it wasn't my views, as a woman, that they were interested in at all.

arranfan · 01/10/2018 00:47

Go, write it in a martial hand; be curst and brief;
it is no matter how witty, so it be eloquent and fun
of invention: taunt him with the licence of ink:
if thou thou'st him some thrice, it shall not be
amiss; and as many lies as will lie in thy sheet of
paper, although the sheet were big enough for the
bed of Ware in England, set 'em down: go, about it.
Let there be gall enough in thy ink, though thou
write with a goose-pen, no matter: about it.

-- Sir Toby Belch, Twelfth Night shakespeare.mit.edu/twelfth_night/twelfth_night.3.2.html

ShcfG · 01/10/2018 01:06

What kooshbin: says: "But right from the start, it was quite obvious that it wasn't my views, as a woman, that they were interested in at all."

That's what I've been getting from this consultation. It is designed for trans ideology. Women fuck off.

raisinsraisins · 01/10/2018 13:31

I’m educated to degree level and use computers as part of my job, but I have given up on filling in this consultation. I will try again, just because I feel so strongly about it, but found that the questions didn’t make sense from a gender critical point of view, and very difficult to answer. Most women I know would not even attempt to get past the first page.

I’m sure that all the transwomen with careers in IT are finding it easier than most....

Serfisafleur · 01/10/2018 13:58

Please try again raisins
I will try tomorrow.

arranfan · 01/10/2018 13:59

raisinsraisins - whoever signed off on the wording of these questions needs a performance review.

Did you take a look at Fair Play for Women's Guide?

fairplayforwomen.com/full_guide/#q3

If we want, we only need to answer 8 questions - not the whole thing. And Yes/No can be enough. It's just so important that we fill it in and return it - so that our elected representatives know that we noticed and we're responding.

Hamster00 · 01/10/2018 14:56

I have just finished mine. It's taken me a good few hours and I've kinda plagiarised/adapted swathes from the Fair Play for Women's Guide as it's more eloquently written than I could have phrased it.

As a transsexual who unequivocally supports the rights of women, I felt quite uneasy as to how all the questions seem to be phrased in such a way to cater to the furtherance of trans ideology.

If anything, the GRA should be stricter and a GRC only issued to those who have not only gone through the entire medical process but have also achieved a surgical outcome.

Self-ID absolutely cannot happen. I just wish I could do more.

GulagsMyArse · 01/10/2018 15:00

I keep putting off, because of this,

Oldstyle · 01/10/2018 16:01

I just tried to upload my responses: two versions - a word doc and a pdf - so that people could use them as a starting point. It didn't work. If someone can tell me how to upload a word doc (assuming that's possible), that would be great.

Haireverywhere · 01/10/2018 17:05

With thanks to this thread I finally managed to complete my response to the consultation online. I have a headache!

howard97A · 01/10/2018 18:32

As some of the questions can't be rationally answered by someone who thinks GRA is a bad idea , I found Question 22 useful. The preamble to Q.22 says

If you do not feel that your views are best put in answer to any of the other questions in this consultation, please use the below box to provide us with any further views you might have about the Gender Recognition Act.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 01/10/2018 18:46

Placemarking
I'm going to try and fill this in tomorrow, I have autism and will need this thread to have any hope of finishing.

BlatheringWuther · 01/10/2018 18:47

It is remarkable when compared to the extraordinarily simplistic question put to the nation in June 2016...

BeenHereAWhileNow · 01/10/2018 22:39

Completed eventually, that was gruelling need Wine Will do the sport one tomorrow

chaoticgood · 01/10/2018 23:22

I agree it's elitist and prohibitively complicated.

It's also manipulative.

All the concepts and language that we base our feminist thought upon are disallowed before you even get to the first question.

ShcfG · 01/10/2018 23:27

Yes, manipulative.

So bloody frustrating. But we must persevere.
