“A cross-party motion to reduce hate crime and make Liverpool a more inclusive city for the transgender community is being put forward at a full council meeting tonight.

Part of that motion includes requesting planning officers to “actively encourage” developers and businesses to include individual gender neutral W/C facilities in public buildings.

It comes after a group called the Liverpool ReSisters defaced public art works at Crosby Beach with stickers regarding trans women and gender recognition.”

When they say individual gender neutral toilets do they mean completely enclosed rooms? I'm good with that if they are big enough to fit a sanitary bin. and no one can hear me fart like a bastard

A third space would be great, as long as it doesn’t impact disabled spaces or decrease the size of the facilities already available for both sexes.

yeah, I think the point is how this is implemented

if they're just going to stick a 'gender neutral' sign on the ladies and / or disabled loos then they can fuck off

if they're going to actually invest and build proper completely enclosed toilets that include a washbasin and sanitary bin, while maintaining existing provision for disabled users, and providing single sex women's toilets, then super!

Charliethefeminist · 19/09/2018 08:58

Assume they mean mixed sex. All toilets are already gender neutral. They're just single sex.

At the Tate Modern they just stuck an 'all gender' sign on the accessible toilet, which was then lost to people with disabilities. Such modern.

As PP says, if these are additional and not a repurposing of the disability space, that's fine - if it is a repurposing, No.

A third space would be great, as long as it doesn’t impact disabled spaces or decrease the size of the facilities already available for both sexes.

Given that there will be physical constraints, if the provision of the third space requires a slight reduction in the size of the single sex facilities, so be it. Of course, because of the well known 'women's loo queue' issue - women, for a variety of good reasons take longer on average than men - the space should generally be taken more from the male loo space.

Tate modern also have single cubicle "all gender" toilets in the members area o hark at me

They were all liberally covered in piss the last time I was there

I think single cubicles plus fully enclosed plus sinks can work if they are cleaned more regularly

Charliethefeminist · 19/09/2018 09:16

Anlaf if I see stickers in there I will know it was you

How expensive is the coffee tho

As PP says, if these are additional and not a repurposing of the disability space, that's fine - if it is a repurposing, No.

I'm pretty sure that the numbers of people with disabilities is far greater than the number of transgender people who don't want to use the correct sex loo, so maybe if extra separate cubicles are being added, some could actually also be designed as disabled loos. So you'd have the existing disabled-only, then the new facilities could have the all-inclusive label iyswim. This would be a much better use of space in many locations, wouldn't it?

Also, if there's any locations where dads take kids that don't yet have baby change or parent and child loos, the new any-sex loo should be designed for that usage.

Brilliant suggestions Errol

I assume Liverpool City council are acting in good faith with the interests of all citizens in mind, so it's likely that they are considering the options you lay out
