Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Men can say/do/ask things women can’t....

In the last 2 days I’ve watched Paris lees on the Island where she did object to being asked to describe her genitals but did not throw a wobbler when James cracknell (in what I am sure was a totally innocent way) told her ‘you’ve got balls to do that’ and I went to see League of Gentlemen live where they were ridiculing people for identifying as unicorns, various characters dressed up as women, a trans women taxi driver was discussed and other ‘transphobic’ acts.

Am I being paranoid or can men do and say things that get dismissed as ‘banter’ or ‘plain speaking’ where women are crucified? Am I being paranoid?

Thanks

I always think that the episodes of SATC where Samantha shouts at the drag queens out of her window, or Charlotte dresses as a man for a photographer would be considered highly transphobic if they were made in 2018 rather than 2001.

I am just amazed there is not one reference on Twitter or anywhere else to James cracknell’s comment.

LOG has discussed their views and again, not been vilified:

Men can say and do what they like, that’s the point.

WomanOfTime · 18/09/2018 08:43

Yes. Very similar to the situation where TRAs are trying to get MN shut down for 'hate speech' but ignore the majority-male Reddit, 4chan or KiwiFarms where actual transphobic comments are made.

Men can say what they like. Women should shut up and believe what those men tell them, or at least pretend to.

The League of Gentlemen have said in interview that the characters Babs (the trans taxi driver) and Papa Lazarou would probably not be written these days.

womanintrousers · 18/09/2018 09:28

This is what Mark Gatiss has said:

*When asked about returning the character of Babs in a more modern context, Mark Gatiss told BBC Radio Four’s Front Row that it was still important to ‘lampoon’ such issues, rather than grow too sensitive.
“We had a a lot of discussions around how the world has changed, and there are a lot of real things where you think ‘well, it was a long time ago’ – but there are also things that you feel you can still lampoon,” he said. “To me, some of the wilder extremities of gender politics create a kind of madness where almost nothing is capable of being said any more. I think that’s still an area where there is room to have a laugh.”
Co-creator Jeremy Dyson continued: “Gender politics isn’t really about gender politics. It’s about something else. There’s something else lurking underneath it.”
“We always loved that we were the first show to our knowledge that did naked drag.”

I once got flamed on a forum, and my view dismissed, for saying "they" instead of "she". The "she" in question was a prolific male sex offender, but apparently saying "they" made me the real villain. This was specified by the person - who in all other respects did not appear to be barking mad - who flamed me.

Have you seen Ricky Gervais most recent standup on Netflix - he, too, says stuff that no woman could get away with.

JellySlice · 18/09/2018 16:07

That's because the Trans Rights movement is a cuckoo in the dysphoria nest. It is a disguise for rank misogyny, narcissism and the desire to control women. The collateral damage is terrible for people genuinely suffering from dysphoria, for gender non-conforming children, for confused teenage girls, and for society as a whole.

There's nothing stopping any of us using those boards. The rules of engagement for sites like that are fairly harsh, but they are open to all (and it shows)
Female socialisation? Sensitive jobs? Politically sensitive social life? Those are the blockers. This is why Posie Parker can say what she likes - she's not a teacher or a social worker or an HR manager who can be targeted by trolls who will get her sacked.
None of us want to get doxxed or piled on or harassed so we moderate what we say, and we say it on a mainstream board subject to editorial moderation, we abide by a house style and avoid use of certain words. We're still managing to have a good debate, presumably the effort is worth it because MN is more accessible and has a wider reach.
