Labour call for ban on early pregnancy sex testing

Just saw this on the BBC website. Labour are concerned about the termination of female foetuses and wish to ban parents being told baby's sex after early blood tests.

So the Labour Party who are totally on board with the idea that being female is a feeling in a person's head have concerns that female foetuses are at risk of termination. Wonder what it is about those particular feotuses that put them at such riskHmm

While I abhor the sex selection of babies I am frustrated at the lack of critical thought and the cognitive dissonance involved. How can biological sex be less important than what stereotypes you identify with but still be a reason why a particular type of foetus can be aborted. Its bloody illogical to agree with both!

Hope the link works I'm not a regular poster more of a lurker!

Some discussion around the Labour call in this earlier thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3367831-I-m-firmly-pro-choice-but

Come on! You're expecting the woke brethren in Labour to actually think about what they say.

Is this a problem in Britain ?
I know it is in other countries that prefer males.

It's tempting to call their bluff and ask them how they know what gender the foetuses identify as. If they want to refute the point sensibly they will be forced to talk about biological sex as a reality.

That BBC article drives me right up the wall with its constant conflation of sex and gender, using both interchangeably Angry

James O Brien talking over women about it right now. Has however been schooled to use 'sex' instead of 'gender at least.

I don't know if it's something John McDonnell might discuss on the 18 Sept. web chat.

But whatever we do, let's not scare him off in advance, eh?

failingatlife · 17/09/2018 13:24

Yeah it also annoyed me how gender & sex were used interchangably throughout the article HmmConfused

I don't see how a ban can be enforced, when there are sex linked diseases that you need to screen for.

failingatlife · 17/09/2018 16:54

upstart I think if prospective parents are aware of sex linked diseases in their family they would go down the IVF route & only implant the preferred sex embryos.

Sex selection is illegal in the UK except for where there is a chance of sex related serious illness/condition/disability.
The issue here is termination purely because baby is not the desired sex. Usually female feotuses as boys are more valued in some cultures
So it would still be possible to choose sex where it is a medical issue.
