Just watching it now and was interested if it had been discussed? Search on phone found nothing!

Is that the one he made a few years ago?

nopeni · 15/09/2018 16:26

Oh is it that old? The BBC app just had it on the screen (only just downloaded it on DH's iPad so not sure why it would show an old one!)

I was mainly feeling uncomfortable at how young the kids were, and wondered how others felt about it even being made really.

Here is a link from 3 years ago which discusses the programme www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/2348226-Transgender-kids-article-in-todays-Guardian

I remember it clearly because it pique-transed me, as in, first aroused my interest in the ludicrous concept of 'gender identity'. I peak-transed about a year after that.

Thanks for the link! Smile

Missed this, going to read thread.

Already found this comment ironic!

*Female clothes"

Aaaah!

There is no such thing as "female clothes".

I'm with Eddie Izard on this one.*

I watched it a couple of days ago as it's currently featured prominently on BBC iplayer. I found it very sad, especially the teenager at the end wondering, like any other 14 year old, what sort of future they were going to have as the reality and enormity of what they were doing suddenly dawned on them.

nopeni · 15/09/2018 17:50

Yes, heartbreaking. All those professionals who should have been there to guide them and they just went right ahead on the basis that "it's better than suicide".

The male surgeon seemed slimy, and the doctor/counsellor (?) woman seemed smug.

Poor kid at the end was trying to articulate what was wrong (including the terror of losing god), and they just dismissed it as "every fourteen year old's worries about will I get a boyfriend". I can only hope it was selective editing?

As for Cole who has a permanent tv programme existing about his trans life when he didn't even want people at school knowing - I don't know, I just felt a bit intrusive even watching.

Hope they're all doing okay now.

On a related topic - has there been any further coverage of Jazz Jennings since the removal of this child's male sex organs?

An old article but a good one here:

<a class="break-all" href="https://blogs.spectator.co.uk/2015/04/trans-activists-are-effectively-experimenting-on-children-could-there-be-anything-more-cruel/amp/#click=t.co/O56SeDg2QI" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">blogs.spectator.co.uk/2015/04/trans-activists-are-effectively-experimenting-on-children-could-there-be-anything-more-cruel/amp/#click=t.co/O56SeDg2QI

About the documentary.

"‘Transgender kids’ – the quote marks are because I’m not convinced that toddlers are capable of thinking – are in the news.On Sunday, BBC 2 aired Louis Theroux’s documentary on trans kids in America. Like all ofTheroux’s work, it was objective, observant and humane."

TimeLady · 15/09/2018 18:07

And didn't the teen say something about 'being a mom'? Jeez. Didn't anyone explain?

TerfedOff · 15/09/2018 18:17

When we are old and grey there will be a lot of sad tales being told by these mutilated and sterilized children.

TimeLady · 15/09/2018 18:25

This was a boy transitioning to a girl who was worried about 'being a mom' …...

Noqont · 15/09/2018 18:30

Watched that the other day. It was interesting, especially the biological boy who had no plans to remain being a trans girl / woman when he grew up. Very dysfunctional family, well at least the mum was.

I thought Louis was quite astute when he picked up on the fact that the little boy liked the feeling of silk.

Ekphrasis · 16/09/2018 08:13

The only child I've ever know who 'preferred girls things' and then later became frustrated so wanted to become a girl, was originally obsessed with having long hair.

Which of course he did have later on. Was seen at Tavistock I believe and later decided he was definitely happy to be a boy and loved fashion.

nopeni · 16/09/2018 09:05

What struck me (and again - editing hopefully accounts for this) was no one saying "but what is it about being a girl that you can't be or do now?" to the 5 year old. Is it clothes? Let him wear clothes! (Although, 5! How the hell are 5 year olds supposed to articulate this?)

The part where one kid had no problems before puberty, but the changes and the way that other people looked at (formerly her) made transitioning the next step.

The part where the woman said it was only at age 14ish that "they begin to comprehend abstract thoughts / that this is permanent / how it will affect them", and how many are sad about it.

Even if that's temporary (and the documentary had very few stats or experts in it), wouldn't that be enough to say no decisions should be made until later?

This one's also worth a watch
Transgender Kids: Who Knows Best - BBC Documentary Banned in Canada

The TRAs tried to stop the BBC showing it here last year, and in Canada they succeeded in stopping the TV networks from showing it.
