I've got my ticket - I'm pregnant and have anxiety so a bit worried if there's any nonsense outside. But scousers are lovely so hopefully all will be well.

duffed · 25/09/2018 12:47

So... as we notice protestors finding the venue and planning harassment/filming on twitter, do we report or just smile and wave?

BingBongSong · 25/09/2018 13:21

I don't know, tbh. SwearyGodmother took biscuits previously, which were refused.....

oneWeirdReSister · 25/09/2018 13:34

BBC are going to be there. Wonder if they'll film the protests?

duffed · 25/09/2018 13:47

Good strategy. Maybe the biscuits weren't up to scratch. Do Yorkie bars still have the 'it's not for girls' packaging?

jgrobinson · 25/09/2018 21:57

Clara Barker, transwoman, observing WPUK meeting in Oxford in April:
"I also saw one person trying to push biscuits into the mouths of the protestors. The act was clearly intended as silly but provocative. There was no thought to allergies. Those biscuits would have made me very sick. Such a simple action can have serious consequences for some people. But this was not thought about."

duffed · 25/09/2018 22:10

I'm sure a simple "No thanks" would have sufficed Clara.

BingBongSong · 25/09/2018 23:49

I had such a great evening! Sorry we did not get a chance to meet, Duffed and mrswarthog. I didn't make it to the pub, but I met several lovely mumsnetters!

It was an excellent line-up of speakers and wonderful to meet and hear again from the ReSisters. Lots of delegates from the Labour party conference. Lucy Masoud's speech really moved me, she was so articulate. Helen Watts made some really pertinent points about how different rules would apply to the same child depending on what they said or presented. Janice Turner was there too!

Do you know, it just felt so refreshing to be able to sit in a room and know that I wasn't alone in my concerns - I'm feeling gaslighted on an industrial scale at the moment.

CrackpotsArePots · 26/09/2018 06:41

jg

Oh that's very very funny. very funny. They are so desperate aren't they?

DebbieInBirmingham · 26/09/2018 07:23

Really good meeting. Lovely to meet new people (some from here) and catch up with friends I've met at previous meetings. For me the informal session afterwards is just as valuable as the formal session. :-)

GinNeeded · 26/09/2018 07:47

What a fantastic evening. Thought provoking and refreshing. I can honestly say that it was amazing to be in the company of the such passionate and articulate women.

Just to reassure people that there wasn't a crowd outside or any of that nonsense. I do wonder if that was was because the bbc were filming?

It was lovely to meet other Mumsnetters which felt a bit clandestine.

I am going to get involved with the Resisters as soon as possible.

Thank you again BingBongSong for sharing this on the other thread.

I am now jealous of those going to Manchester on Friday.

silentcrow · 26/09/2018 07:54

Wait, there were NO protesters? Is that a first?

I'm intrigued by the BBC being there, I wonder if it was intended for local or national news. Bet it won't be shown if there was no ruckus.

oneWeirdReSister · 26/09/2018 07:59

There were two people filming/taking pictures of people as they entered the building.

I was quite tense and worried that there would be trouble, so that was a relief.

duffed · 26/09/2018 09:48

I think it helped that Stonewall were having a meeting about trans inclusivity at the same time. The other side of town.

PeriwinkleBlues · 26/09/2018 10:01

The cynic in me thinks the lack of protestors was a deliberate attempt to discredit us. Women have been complaining of intimidation and silencing by the TRAs at these meetings but when the BBC turn up to film, there's not a peep from them! Or maybe I'm overthinking it...

Great meeting though- really inspiring. And great meet some MNers. Thanks BingBongSong for organising a meet!

oneWeirdReSister · 26/09/2018 11:58

It's good that the focus can't be on the drama of protestors and more about the content of speeches. One hopes.

GinNeeded · 26/09/2018 15:12

I had the courage to walk in the office this morning and say I was at a fantastic meeting last night. We need more debate. I used the Girl guide example of the safeguarding needed to take my son on a residential and how they would simply not apply if my 5 yo simply decided he was a girl. After the calls of "that's ridiculous" died down...I added the "cherry is we can't even be informed as parents due to privacy! "

People really thought I was joking.

I would never done that if it hadn't been for last night.

Dropping pebbles can stimulate debate.

Getting people thinking about safeguarding and what it all means in real life is paramount.

mrswarthog · 26/09/2018 18:11

Sorry I didn't get to meet you all! It was a brilliant meeting, all the speakers were fab, particularly Lucy Masoud although I thought the doctor who spoke was amazing too. I'm lucky enough to work in an environment where this is being taken seriously so could talk quite freely today.

JackyHolyoake · 26/09/2018 20:13

When Stonewall refers to "inclusivity" what it means is exclusion if females!

Stonewall has become a male supremacist rights movement ...

BingBongSong · 26/09/2018 23:08

There are a few of us going to the Manchester meeting on Friday too Smile.

I discussed this with my colleagues at work today and they were appalled to hear about male rapists being placed in women's prisons.

Do you know, it was refreshing (dishearteningly so) to be able to even mention self ID leading to the placing of male rapists in women's prisons at the meeting, without being shut down, as I was on my own social media yesterday.

I was enthusing about the meeting with dh tonight and he agrees with what was said about the TRA movement being an MRA movement.

Barracker · 26/09/2018 23:20

It was a fantastic meeting and I met some awesome women. It's difficult not to get overexcited in that kind of environment. This movement is building.

And I'm going on Friday too. I'm womanning HARD this week.

BingBongSong · 26/09/2018 23:29

SilentCrow, this was the note about the BBC:

Please note, filming by the BBC:

The BBC want to cover the issue of silencing of debate and they will be filming the panel. They have agreed not to film or record the audience in any way that individuals can be identified. They will only film other individuals by specific consent.

Elizabeth Glinka was the correspondent and said she will inform WPUK when the broadcast date is known.

BingBongSong · 26/09/2018 23:34

I've become mistrustful of the BBC and its reporting on self ID, so I'm not sure what to expect from them.

silentcrow · 27/09/2018 00:22

How very interesting. I wonder if they'll also schlep over from Media City on Friday.

Guess they didn't get much bang for their buck if nobody turned up to protest...
