Here

I'll complain when I summon coherent words

I feel like I am in some sort of weird opposite universe reading that.

A leading child protection expert condemned disclosing a pupil's gender identity to their parents as a potential “child protection issue”.

Which 'leading child protection expert' said that?

WTAF?

LangCleg · 12/09/2018 19:08

Christ. These fucking idiots are going to create an abuse scandal of a fucking catastrophic size. Most of whom will be the very children they are saying they represent.

arranfan · 12/09/2018 19:10

Sadly, I'm not surprised. Buzzfeed lost their excellent UK Director when Tom Phillips went to the fact checking organisation, Full Fact.

www.pressgazette.co.uk/buzzfeeds-tom-phillips-aims-to-grow-full-fact-into-all-conquering-behemoth-of-accuracy-as-he-is-appointed-fact-checking-charitys-new-editor/

Phillips is the author of: Humans: A Brief History of How We F*cked It All Up

BuzzFeed is a click reliant craphole. So, I'm not even going to add to their ability to disseminate this shite by clicking on it.

RedToothBrush · 12/09/2018 19:12

Buzzfeed is woke and pandering to the woke identity.

They've done some cracking investigative journalism lately into children in care and how they are being failed by institutions that are supposed to be looking after them.

Shame they also resort to this click bait nonsense too.

R0wantrees · 12/09/2018 19:13

Which 'leading child protection expert' said that?

It may well be Joanna Nichols as she is quoted later in the article.

from her website her testimonials suggest she's high profile:

7YearsOfBlood · 12/09/2018 19:21

I just read it - the comments are predictably full of a complete lack of any understanding.

Such a shame that in the past Buzzfeed have pulled it out of the bag (eg Kid's Company) but are so fucking woke at the moment that they're 15 Red Bulls down and snorting the ProPlus Hmm

TheCraicDealer · 12/09/2018 19:24

They post at least one pro-trans piece a fortnight. I have seen GC comments in the comment sections before, but not on this one so far. The article about the (make, gay) mayor being all aggressive about Trans rights actually had a lot of GC chat underneath, even though the article itself was a load of fawning trash.

My fave buzzfeed piece recently was "Five items pregnant people need in their lives", including various nursing bras. Pregnant people. Just fuck up!

terryleather · 12/09/2018 19:28

It's written by Patrick Strudwick so no surprises there...

CigarsofthePharoahs · 12/09/2018 19:33

Wow that was terrible.

ChattyLion · 12/09/2018 19:52

Eh? What did I just read?
It talks with no quotation marks about being able to change sex Confused

That’s not possible.

Also states as fact: ‘Children cannot medically transition in Britain, although in principle they can have hormone therapy from the age of 16 and surgery from 18.’

What about blockers? What about the kids who buy blockers or hormones off the internet?

This is surreal to read.

ChattyLion · 12/09/2018 20:27

I had to reread it.
Then I read the comments... Hmm
... wow.

I do think it’s worth engaging with Buzzfeed- they clearly do have a readership. Who are being fed a seriously bonkers party line.. Sad

arranfan · 12/09/2018 23:06

Transgender Trend has decided to remove its stickers from its site:

Although we obviously never intended our stickers to be used in schools, we understand people's concerns that they could be used to create conflict between students. This is the last thing we want, so we have withdrawn the stickers from our site. We are sorry, we made a mistake.

arranfan · 12/09/2018 23:12

As an indication of how Transgender Trend reflected upon the feedback from Buzzfeed and Times:

In response to today’s articles in thetimes about our factual sticker sheet and BuzzFeed about school information sharing with the family unit we would like to reaffirm our core values: we oppose all forms of bullying, we support good communication and individualised support.

Bingpot · 12/09/2018 23:19

Wait, what? It's a child protection issue to withhold information about a vulnerable child from their parents? That is nonsense.

The first rule of safeguarding with children is you don't keep secrets. Mermaids are terrifying if this is the sort of shit they're promoting. I don't care how high profile whoever is, what they're advocating is the opposite of safeguarding children.

AngryAttackKittens · 13/09/2018 00:02

A leading child protection expert condemned disclosing a pupil's gender identity to their parents as a potential “child protection issue”

So not withholding information from parents is a safeguarding concern according to the person who wrote this?

Well that's not sinister or anything!

Elephantinacravat · 13/09/2018 07:48

Aren't safeguarding leads and pastoral managers up and down the country thinking 'what?!' when they are faced with guidance like this? Aren't they questioning it?

Keeping secrets, not informing parents of what is going on with their child, trying to create a barrier between a child and their parent or paint parents as abusive if they are not 100% on board... If this were anything else other than trans issues huge alarm bells would be ringing here wouldn't they?

tiredandweary · 13/09/2018 08:44

Only social services via the courts can remove parental responsibility - not Mermaids, not schools, not anyone else.
This judgement clearly shows the abuse that can to children when people follow guidance put out by safeguarding-ignorant groups:

www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Fam/2016/2430.html

Anlaf · 13/09/2018 09:09

I thought this bit "Davies-Arai is not qualified in medicine, law, or teaching, and does not have professional experience working with trans people. She described herself as a sculptor and a “credited instructor in communication skills”."

was weird.

Cos Susie Green for mermaids was quoted uncritically - and isn't her only qualification having a child who transitioned and who had surgery at 16?

LangCleg · 13/09/2018 09:39

Well that's not sinister or anything!

They might as well hang out a sign:

Abusers! Gender-questioning children gather here! Come quick! No safeguarding for these kids! You can do whatever you like and nobody will know!!

Bingpot · 14/09/2018 08:07

I didn't realise that schools could withhold information about a pupil's access to sexual health care from their parents as per the Fraser guidelines. They can get the morning after pill, std treatment without parental knowledge. Not sure if this includes abortion.

Can anyone offer more insight on this as I'm not sure I've got it right?

Either way, I feel this is demonising parents, who with no other social services concerns are being deemed to be unable to act in their child's best interests. Susie Green argues schools can't tell which parents will react badly - surely the assumption has to be that, being the parents, they will act in their child's best interests. You can't assume otherwise without any evidence.

It seems like an incredible responsibility for a child's welfare for the school to shoulder alone.

And - as 16/17 yr olds can consent to medical treatment, are such minors able to access hormone therapy treatment without their parents knowledge? And without their consent?

WrongKindOfFace · 14/09/2018 08:12

Do they not think parents might notice if Bob starts wearing a dress?

Cherrygardenst · 14/09/2018 08:17

I came across my younger sisters Instagram in which she was calling herself they/them and boasting about secretly wearing binders that my mum found but didn't know what it was. I screenshotted everything and sent it to my mum. Idgaf. If that was my kid, I'd want to know, I'd be a hypocrite if I left it alone.
