I didn't realise that schools could withhold information about a pupil's access to sexual health care from their parents as per the Fraser guidelines. They can get the morning after pill, std treatment without parental knowledge. Not sure if this includes abortion.
Can anyone offer more insight on this as I'm not sure I've got it right?
Either way, I feel this is demonising parents, who with no other social services concerns are being deemed to be unable to act in their child's best interests. Susie Green argues schools can't tell which parents will react badly - surely the assumption has to be that, being the parents, they will act in their child's best interests. You can't assume otherwise without any evidence.
It seems like an incredible responsibility for a child's welfare for the school to shoulder alone.
And - as 16/17 yr olds can consent to medical treatment, are such minors able to access hormone therapy treatment without their parents knowledge? And without their consent?
