Dd asked in NHS appointment "do you identify with..." in questionnaire

NHS appointment with primary aged DD. At end, was asked to fill in questionnaire on a tablet about experience of appointment, we were told either DD or I could do it and as I was occupied with DD2 (toddler) and as DD1 wanted to do it, she went ahead. Most questions were about how friendly the practitioner was etc but one question near the end was as follows:

"Do you identify with...." then two pictures similar to those you see on bathrooms. DD was confused and said "Does it mean am I a girl or a boy?" To which the practitioner said "...er, yes, basically " to which DD shrugged and said "well then I guess..." and clicked on the silhouetted skirt wearer.

I am pissed off beyond belief at myself that I didn't challenge this at the time, and just say that her sex is female, she doesn't even understand the word 'identify' and certainly not in this context, but I didn't. I should get a letter about the appointment in due course at which point I'll complain direct to the practitioner. Really upset about this though as I can't really see what they're alluding to there other than regressive sex stereotypes (girls wear skirts), plus it was very confusing for DD.

On the plus side, your DD sounds sensible.

AuntMsVanillaRose · 11/09/2018 11:40

If you don't like the skirt/dress icon on toilet doors, what else do you suggest? I mean, you don't want anyone using the "wrong" toilet, and not everyone in the UK reads English.

UpstartCrow · 11/09/2018 11:40

As a parody account, the humour in your posts misses the mark.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/09/2018 11:43

Do we have a GF amongst us? (not you OP).

BettyDuMonde · 11/09/2018 11:44

Write and complain, op.

Re: toilet signs, I reckon we start having line drawings of willies and vulvas.

No language problems, no post modernism problems, no sexism problems.

FanWithoutAGuard · 11/09/2018 11:48

What a rubbish question - it needed explanation about what they were trying to ascertain.

If I was presented with that, I'd need to know what they are asking, because yes, I'm a woman, but I don't identify as one, or as a skirt wearer, so actually the male bod would be the more correct one to pick, going strictly by the words.

ADastardlyThing · 11/09/2018 12:03

How do I know if I identify as a woman? I don't know how it feels I don't think, so how do I know? I just AM a woman Confused

Madness.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/09/2018 12:16

What would be most worrying was if a child innocently said they identified with the sex they are not, simply because they were having a fantasy day or identifying with a character in a film or book or something - potentially this could put an unanticipated train of events into motion.

arranfan · 11/09/2018 12:21

I'm thinking of periods in development where if children were asked if they identified with being a train or "squeaky little mouse" they'd say, "Yes".

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/09/2018 12:28

Yes. And beyond this, why promulgate the idea that sex is about what you identify as? 99% of the population accepts that they are male or female, as demarcated by their chromosomes and genitals and even children generally know that they are a girl or a boy. To suggest that they can 'identify out of this' is a dangerous seed to plant. By all means, if a child has 'gender dysphoria' (and I prefer body dysmorphia because I think this is more accurate) or is intersex (and if ambiguity arises as a result) then treat them with sensitivity - but most children know they are girls or boys.

Re: toilet signs, I reckon we start having line drawings of willies and vulvas. No language problems, no post modernism problems, no sexism problems.

Honestly, I agree completely. Far less confusing or open to abuse.

It was so vague and just weird really. Who the hell asks a child that question? DD2 currently seems to largely identify as a dinosaur (dine-saw) at the moment, so lucky I wasn't there for her.....

Oh, and why use toilet door style icons on a questionnaire? Are you male / female would have sufficed. Also, I note there was no third stick figure so not even very well though through for wokeness, what about non-binary folks?

AngryAttackKittens · 11/09/2018 12:44

Do you identify as a triangle with legs or a rectangle with legs?

Massively effective way of communicating with patients there, well done them.

BettyDuMonde · 11/09/2018 12:46

I’m an upside down heart with legs. What about MEEEEEEEEEE?

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 11/09/2018 12:51

Yes, will complain. Need to get DD2 to bloody sleep through the night get my head in order and write something clear. If anyone has thoughts about what salient points to include do let me know.

Apart from anything else I don't think it is healthy for their mental health to encourage kids to think they can be something they're not (tall/ royalty / the opposite sex), and particularly in light of what the appointment was about (not going to disclose here but a physical reality DD1 cannot identify out of). It's good to encourage them to be the best they can be and imbue them with the belief they can change and improve their lives but denying physical reality is not helpful.

On the plus side, your DD sounds sensible Thanks. Yes, I was very proud of the no-nonsense ""Does it mean am I a girl or a boy?".

FFS. The cult really have got their claws in deeply.

This is gaslighting abuse of children's vulnerable minds.

Yes body dysmorphia, or probably 'self dysphoria'.

Beachcomber · 11/09/2018 14:23

FFS that is outrageous.

It is grooming. For crying out loud.

Grooming is normally a process done to desensitize a person to gradually escalating abusive behaviours. Here children are being desensitized to an ideology.

It is highly likely that this question has been introduced by some well meaning woke dogooder in order to be PC. But the end result is the same - our children are being groomed with a drip drip effect to absorb the trans dogma that your reproductive sex is not something biological and material but something you identify with and choose.

Appalling.
