I work in a university. I won't say what I do but I'm close to the senior management.

A proposed policy on transgender crossed my desk. It started off as well meaning - a change to a system so trans students could id their gender different to their sex - so as to avoid the trauma of a computer system misgendering them.

But someone had gotten hold of it and gone full woke on it. Lots of talk about self id, no one must question anyone's gender, right to access facilities according to their gender id. Referenced Mermaids as a go-to for trans information.

I arranged a meeting with the Director of HR (it was a HR policy affecting staff as well as students) and talked through everything I knew about the issues, and how it would apply to a university context - e.g. 50 year old men accessing female gym changing rooms full of 18 year old students, men demanding to be put in with women in single sex campus accommodation (including shared bedrooms).

It took all of 3 minutes for the penny to drop. The policy is going back to the drawing board to only reference a computer system.

NB this is not about hating on the trans. The university is very very inclusive and supportive. Lots of GN facilities. Correct language and pronouns respected and promoted. Trans students fully supported. But thankfully in this case there was the right balance between trans support and recognition and the protection of single sex spaces.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/09/2018 08:36

Oh well done!

heresyandwitchcraft · 05/09/2018 08:36

Nicely done OP!

TimeLady · 05/09/2018 08:37

Well done you. Flowers

I guess that's how these policies have slipped through the net by stealth in the past.

Datun · 05/09/2018 08:38

Excellent. It can be done. Good for you.

Gncq · 05/09/2018 09:14

Amazing to know there are center critical women out there who are able to influence policy within universities.
Most are falling foul of the tra agenda and it's awful to hear the nonsense degree level students are repeating.
Well done!

sashh · 05/09/2018 09:51

Well done

BossWitch · 05/09/2018 09:53

Well done! So glad it worked.

Viago · 05/09/2018 09:54

Well done. Sorry I love the phrase "gone full woke" Grin

Mrskeats · 05/09/2018 09:54

Brilliant. More of this everywhere pls

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 05/09/2018 09:55

Thank you Gin

KittyKlawsReturns · 05/09/2018 09:56

It cheers me to know there is someone like you watching out for this. As you have said you can be inclusive and supportive without 'going full on woke' and causing other people problems.

AndYetItMoves · 05/09/2018 09:57

That's fantastic news!

VoleClock · 05/09/2018 09:57

Well done op (and can I say 'door hinge'?)

RhymesWithOrange · 05/09/2018 09:58

Thank you BlushSmile pleased to have contributed in my own small way.

I imagined how parents would feel dropping off their precious daughter at university for the first time to find she was sharing a room with David/Davida and the carnage that would cause!

door hinge?

Rhymes with Orange...

Well done OP.

Awayfromitall · 05/09/2018 10:01

Right now, I wish I didn't work at a university, that's all I can say. I used to laugh contemptuously about people on the political right who complained that they were vilified for often quite mainstream views. Not laughing anymore.

Well done OP.

Beamur · 05/09/2018 10:09

Encouraging that your HR people were willing to see the potential risks and abuses. Hope they come up with a policy that respects everyone's needs.

Mrbatmun · 05/09/2018 10:10

Well done! And I'm glad people saw through it quite quickly as well.

NameChangedAgain18 · 05/09/2018 10:11

Completely with you there Awayfromitall

Well done, OP. My university has already fully implemented self-ID without any consultation. The worst thing about this is that there will be lots of young women, including Muslims, who are simply unaware that they may find themselves sharing a bedroom with a "woman" with a penis, or seeing a penis in the swimming pool changing rooms. So they don't even have the chance to avoid these situations.

AbsintheFriends · 05/09/2018 10:14

Well done!

It's not just about the potential for room sharing etc, but also the wider culture. I hate the idea of my daughters living in an atmosphere of unquestioning acceptance and unrestricted access, knowing that it's been sanctioned by the authorities and that any instinctive discomfort they feel must be squashed down.

I'm grateful for your courage in speaking up.

RhymesWithOrange · 05/09/2018 10:15

@NameChangedAgain18 and @Awayfromitall Sad I'm sorry.

My university is generally sensible but unaware of the furore.

I wonder what would happen if GC students and parents started asking questions at open days about the protection of sex segregated spaces? Universities are in a fight to the death for student numbers.
