'Caring for Gender Non-conforming Young People'

I'm undertaking some mandatory training with this title and have just read the following question:

Maisie currently goes to an all girls school. Maisie asks 'when I start living as a boy will I have to leave this school?' How would you respond?

I answered a) yes, Maisie will have to leave the school

And this is the response: That's not the right answer. Some single sex schools believe, wrongly, that they are not allowed to have any children of the opposite sex. Young people should not be encouraged to leave.

I don't even know where to start with this.

It is all very f**ked up.

14 year old is affirmed by everyone as being in the wrong body. Parents and school told that if they don't do it kid will attempt suicide. Tavistock would urge caution and watchful waiting but their waiting list is so long that it is 18 months to get an appointment, so social transition happens before they get anywhere near it.

Of course the root problem is that anyone who defies gender stereotypes (regardless if you identify as trans) can be bullied mercilessly.

There is no good answer.

hackmum · 03/09/2018 15:05

Hmm well, if Maisie should stay at the girls school (which incidentally, I agree with) then if a boy transitions to living as a girl, he should stay at the boys school?

I assume the correct logic, as determined by the Thought Police, is that trans children can attend whichever school they feel comfortable at. And if you dare tentatively suggesting that they apply logic to the situation, then you will be damned as a Terf, a bigot and a fascist. I think that's how it works.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/09/2018 15:20

Alternate logic is that male environments are dangerous so everyone who's at risk should go in with the girls (what do you mean that would then put the girls at risk to na na we can't hear you!)

It seems increasing numbers of young people may have first identified as trans, are now also identifying as non-binary (eg Jess Bradley, Fox & Owl) or indeed identify solely as non-binary (which is also considered trans see BACP guidance).
These individuals may well expect to use which ever facilities etc they identify with (allowing also for the fact that as gender may be fluid, this may well change from day-to-day eg Philip / Pips Bunce)

I'm going to say it - I've been holding back, but I can't stay quiet any longer.

I don't really understand the concept of 'non-binary'. I get entirely the notion that a girl/woman or boy/man doesn't want to be confined to gender stereotypes - hell, I'm sitting here in my usual uniform of joggy bottoms and men's t-shirt as we speak. I've had short hair for years and do not wear make-up, even in professional life.

But why is it a 'thing'? How can you be 'trans' AND 'non-binary'? Wear what the fuck you want! Look how you want! But if you've got male bits, go into the fucking men's toilets, etc - why is that so difficult?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 03/09/2018 17:25

That just doesn't make you 'special' enough, [sad unicorn emoji]

I say reclaim rainbows for kids/happy people/1970s TV presenters, and unicorns for the fairy and Hobbit loving types.

Because then they're special!

I've just been startled to learn that GIRES claims that transition has been associated with the remission of autism, symptoms of ASD etc.

The symptoms have disappeared once the dysphoria has been treated.

I sort of have some hope for the non binary thing.

I strongly disagree that it should be enshrined into any sort of legislation but it's a step away from children having any kind of irreversible medical treatment and a step closer to the younger generation having the epiphany that extreme gender stereotyping as pushed by a lot of trans ideology is inherently harmful.

If more and more young people move from trans to non binary as a favoured identity then it will be easier I think to keep sex based rights as they are and allow the freedom be whatever on top of that.

Which is kind of what feminists have long argued for.

Starkstaring · 26/09/2018 16:17

Ova, that would be lovely, except that the non-binary 20 year old that I know of, who has a history of self-harm and also a chronic physical illness, has recently asked for and been given (albeit paid for privately) a double mastectomy. It seems that being born female means you are destined to be surgically altered if you don't conform, - I don't think that a non-binary person born male would be expected to need surgery to validate their identity.

Seems like young adult females will lose out no matter how things pan out.

OvaHere · 26/09/2018 16:20

Oh that's disappointing. I did think in general non binary people just 'were' as opposed to trying to alter themselves physically.

Yes it's remarkable how females always lose out.

Starkstaring · 26/09/2018 18:32

I completely agree that being non-binary should mean sticking 2 fingers up to gender stereotypes and getting on with your life, unmolested by surgery and/or artificial hormones.

If you want a glimpse at how medicalised and bizarre it has all become, check this out:

Crikey that's nuts and so unethical.
