Just reading this tweet

Can anyone help clarify what DBS means?

Either you have to list previous names or not...?

The people behind the DBS have thought about it quite carefully, but the fact that the U.K. intentionally and ideologically refuses to have a population register or ID card system means that there’s a limit to what they can achieve.

Race and sexual orientation are also considered sensitive/“special category” data despite the fact that it’s illegal to discriminate on those bases: it’s to protect people against unlawful discrimination (even though race is also in many cases visually obvious).

Previous names for other people (eg maiden names) are not sensitive data as per the list, although you’d still be able to use the “sensitive” DBS route if you were in witness protection or otherwise at risk.

I can't remember ever having to declare my race or sexual orientation for a DBS check.

So the CRB/ DBS system that was robustly tightened following a murder of 2 children could potentially allow the person found guilty to bypass safety checks?

No, you don’t have to report race on a DBS form: nothing on a DBS form is normally “sensitive” except prior names where that reveals transgender status - I was just addressing the poster who said that it was a hangover from the days when discrimination on the basis of gender reassignment was legal.

In order to seriously tighten up holes in the DBS system you would need a compulsory ID register in the U.K., and that’s not going to happen.

Your NI number is linked to the year you were born. Well, the first two letters are. Nothing else in it would give anyone a clue to whether you are male or female.
